    Default Training Razors

This is going to sound like an odd question, but does anyone know if someone makes straight training razors? I am thinking of a razor that acts, looks and feels like the real thing in every way other than it would be impossible to cut with. When I was I child my father used to give me his double edge razor without the blade inserted so that I could shave alongside him. He would lather me up with his brush and we would both shave together. Basically all I was doing was removing lather from my face, but I was learning the techniques and having some good bonding time with my father. I was wondering if there was an equivalent thing I could use with my son so that we could shave together with straight razors and he could learn the ropes. Any thoughts?

I have this vague impression that Glen (gssixgun) put together a very similar thing as what you are describing for someone a while back.

I'd imagine a really really breadknifed old razor may do the trick.

As far as anyone manufacturing something like this, I'm going to be facetious and suggest anything being sold on ebay worth less than 30 bucks would have a child-safe edge...

Good luck, I hope you find something. In all seriousness, see if you cannot track down that thread where Glen made one up for someone - if nothing else it might give you an idea of how to approach it.

Thanks for the suggestions James. I will see if I an hunt down that thread. Hopefully something like this exists. I was thinking of a shavette with the blade removed, but I believe it could be a little uncomfortable for him.

I have seen blunted training razors for sale, but I can't remember where. I seem to remember they sold for around $25. Good luck.

Glen may still be up for it. Or else it may give you some ideas.

    Good luck!

You can always practice using the spine as the edge. You can also take a sharp razor and tape the edge.

I bought a couple razors on Craig's List from a man who had them laying around for decades. I ended up dulling the edge of the razor, grinding the pitting off, adding a patina and making some quick scales for it so my son could practice. He wakes up before dawn so he can shave with me every morning. All in all the razor was $20.

That is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the help in tracking that down.

I bought a Sweeny Todd deamon barber plastic replica as a gag gift once, it was surprisingly real looking and had petty good "feel"
