Ahhh!!! not aristocrat!! Wow, he's gonna regret that one in the morning. I remember seeing my Grandfather drink that stuff. Tasted like turpentine in a bottle... probably worked better too.

Just had a great Gin drink during last night's New Year's Eve festivities at a local speak-easy style establishment. It's called "the bee's knees" and it was a popular prohibiton era ****tail since the honey in it masked the often poisonous and foul tasting bathtup gin that was passing for alcohol in those days. Modernizing it with some delicious floral micro-distillery gin gives you have a hell of a drink.
It consists of:
2 oz Gin
1/2 oz fresh lemon juice
1/2 oz honey syrup (heat two parts honey and one part water until mixed, just like simple syrup but with honey)
Shake ingredients together and pour into a chilled martini glass or stir together on the rocks in a double old fashioned glass (my preference). Garnish with a flamed lemon peel or a dried lavender flower for some great aromatics.
I think this drink may topple my go to Gin and Tonic as a go to spring/summer warm weather refresher.

Arrgghhh... I just tried the first gin that I can honestly say I truely hate. Forgive me, but... Tanqueray Rangpur. Yeah, I know it has its fans here but as we all know, nothing is more subjective than taste. The lime, for me, is waaaay over the top. And I don't mean that in a good way. If you live near Oceanside, California, PM me and you can pick up most of a free bottle.
two part Hendricks
one part tonic
1/2 part (ish) simple syrup
(stirred over ice and strained)
Garnish with a cucumber slice.
I'd play with the syrup, for me I like a less sweet drink so a splash does the trick also to really let the gin take center stage a sparkling water works as well.
Enjoy
definitely thought Hendricks when i read gin
I recently tried no.209 - that's definitely another level of gin than anything i've had before.
I usually drink Beefeaters, but I did pick up a bottle of Hendricks and it is great. The only thing I don't like is that it's a little too subtle for me, if that makes sense. I felt like I was wasting it because I couldn't pick up all the flavors that I knew were there. Regardless, I recently read a drink recipe that is right at place here: equal parts Hendricks and apple juice, top off with Sprite. I haven't had time to try it but let me know how it works.
Tanqueray is my favourite, or good old Gordons.
Three fingers of gin in a pint glass, two squeezed wedges of lime, a slice of cucumber and a handful of ice. Fill the gaps with tonic water, sit in the sun with a good book and enjoy! :)
One of the worst nights of my life was due to gin & tonic. They go down like water and hit you in the face like a ton of bricks. Worst hangover ever! Today with a slightly more educated palate, my gin of choice is a Beefeaters martini, painfully dry, shaken and served up with 2 olives.
I've been drinking Tanqueray recently, because it was quite cheap at the duty free on my way home from the Ontario meet. But, to be honest, I prefer New Amsterdam for a G&T. The slightly sweet and citrus flavor is just really nice with the tonic. But I'm sure a proper gin would be better for martinis.
I am new to gin but I sapphire is by far the best I have had, but as said before real dangerous. No bite at all so it will sneak up on you. I prefer my gin and tonic with lemon instead of lime, some times both if i want something a little diiferent.
Here you go, my tomorrow's SOTD :D

That is great photo and I'm a bit jealous of your bottle of No.209.
:) yeah, I had to spring for the fancy tonic water too - I felt the regular one kinda wastes the no.209
Gotta fight malaria in style :)
Plymouth is the best I have tasted. Any of their variants are good.
I have to say Magellan, Hendrick's second. But I'm just a
big floral fan all-around :)

Sapphire has been my norm for a while now but did pick up some hendricks the other week and will either stick with that or alternate them. Preferred drinks are gin rickey, gin and tonic or a chelsey sidecar.
March has been unseasonably warm here, so decided to start quinine therapy early. Gin and Tonic season usually doesn't start until about mid-April/early May but hey, you can't be too careful about malaria.
I guess I'm kind of strange when it comes to liquor (and many other things as well, I'm sure.) I have seasons. The Spring and early summer is Gin and Tonic season. By mid-June or so it becomes too hot to drink liquor. I then turn into an almost full time beer drinker, except of course for the occassional boat drink (mostly while listening to Jimmy Buffett or Bob Marley.) In the Fall, when the weather begins to cool down (in as much as it does so here) my tastes seem to turn towards bourbon and/or Irish whiskey. Being a codger, I suppose I should turn into a Scotch drinker but for some odd reason I never took to it as a younger man (maybe a project for Fall or Winter). Anyway, cheers fellas, my G&T is locked and loaded and I'm reaching for an Edward's Burl Cut and some Billy Budd.
Hey all
Just thought I'd share what I'm having tonight. I live in Florida and it's hot here already. This drink is perfect for cooling down. Cucumber Gimlet! 2 parts gin, 1 part simple syrup, juice of one lime. Muddle three slices of cucumber shake and pour over ice. Garnish with a cucumber slice. You get bits of cucumber which are good to crunch on!
Cheers

My neighbor was a bartender while in nursing school and she makes a fantastic drink with gin she calls a Gita G. It is 1 part gin to 2 or 3 parts club soda depending how strong you want with crushed ginger and a squirt or two lime juice. Great summer drink
Gentlemen what would you suggest for a good starter gin? While temperatures are still pretty low, mid to high 70's, it seems to be extra humid this year and I'm looking for a change from my usual scotch. I'm thinking Gin and Tonic, Tom Collins, and a handful of other cocktails depending on a whim.
There is a gin made in Philly called Bluecoat- it's in a blue rectangular bottle. It has citrusy overtones.
You can never go wrong with Tanqueray(sp?). Also, back when I drank gin quite a bit, I had a bit of a soft spot for good ole Beefeater.
Tanqueray Rangpur.
Tanqueray is the everyday gin of choice, without getting into the obscure/expensive (/extremely delicious) options like Hendricks or Old Tom or what have you. Tanqueray itself is a very ginny-gin, and the Rangpur variety is a bit sweeter with some hints of lime. It goes excellent with tonic. For a gin newb, that's the way to go.
A nice gin for summer drinks is Plymouth.
Boodles, please.
And speaking of gin, any other Pimm's drinkers here?
i have yet to get on well with Beefeater. Tanqueray for me please. no. 10 is nice. never heard of Rangpur before today.
I've really been turned around to gin recently. Winter is Scotch weather for me, but I was introduced to The Botanist produced by Bruichladdich Distillery. Apparently the Distiller is also a Gin fan and wanted to produce one with the traditional flavourings, but also with botanicals unique to Islay.
Wonderful and unique - I'd recommend it straight, perhaps with a tonic chaser...

As a former Gin drinker,I could never really figure out if gin was an actual beverage,or a drug:)
Let this delightfully cheesy old commercial help better educate you!

Last night I picked up a bottle of Plymouth gin. I had planed on getting tanqueray but found it on clearance for $18. It was very enjoyable in both to Tom Collins I made and the Bloody Marys my roommate made. Thanks for the help gents, I'll try the gin and tonic soon.
I had my first taste of gin and tonic on Saturday night and it was a revelation.
It was Gordon's gin with ice, tonic and a wedge of lime + a shaving of lime zest. And I had more than one!
Anyone here have any experience with Gin? What would be a good brand?
Ah, yes, a good Gin and Tonic is easily one of the best longdrinks imo.
You have started with a good one I think.
Gordon's dry gin is quality stuff.
My personal favorite for GT is Tanqueray though.
Silky smooth and with just the right flavours for a gin and tonic.
I know Gordon's is the biggest brand in Britain but I know that doesn't always mean it's the best.
Tanqueray is a pretty big brand to and I might give it a try.
I know gin can vary drastically from brand to brand. Maybe I'll go to the pub and try a variety
Good timing Kev. I’m putting together a Christmas gift of Bombay Sapphire, tonic, quality olives and some assorted snacks.
It should beat the old fruit basket. ;)
Try some hendricks,I think from scotland, great stuff.
yer hendricks is distilled with rose and cucumber. its nice but pricey for what it is when you go through as much gin as me. ironically after gaining my name i have gone off bombay and now favouring beefeater.
im currently halfway through my first bottle of oliver cromwell. its the aldi home brand small batch gin. its the cheapest premium gin on the market but i bought it because it won gold at the international wine & spirit award. its quite citrusy reminiscent of martin miller gin but half the price. i have been enjoying it in a negroni.
Kev you will have to get fever tree tonic from the supermarket though, best in the world. it will elevate anything, it doesnt matter what gin you get!.
