I've never tried Captains Choice but my brother has. He says the 9 tails is great and mild smelling. And doesn't smell like hai-karate at all.
I love it. Wife says it smells like cloves.
I know how you feel.
For years I resisted the stuff, thinking it would have me smell like some old geezer from down the pub or something.
Finally though, I bought a bottle of Captain Smith's Island spice.
After a few days I found myself really liking it.
Oddly enough, the educated part ( ;) ) of my surroundings seemed to think much the same.
Give it a whirl, it is good stuff!
Search "bay rum parade" for a look at a ton of them. But as far as the scent in general, I didn't think I'd like it but I have Dominica and Dominica lime. Love them both. I end up using the regular Dominica 5 out of 7 days a week.
While it may have alcohol you won't smell like booze. More clove type of smell
Captain's Choice has a strong bay rum scent with little or no clove scent but has hints of cinnamon and citrus. Cat O'Nine Tails on the other hand is clovey. Cat does burn a bit so if you like that, good. For these two products you have to like the bay rum scent as they are not subtle. The Captain's Choice Lime is more moderate than the other because of the lime. They all have witch hazel in them, which is nice. Try one. Lots of us do.
Pinaud Bay Rum is relatively inexpensive and smells quite pleasant. Many of us use it daily, it's a very traditional scent, has stood the test of time and feels great on the face after a shave. Cheers!
Thanks for the replies everyone! I ordered the Captain's Choice, I think I'm really going to like it. The aftershave I use now has Witch Hazel and my skin loves it.
I did not care to much for the bay rum at first(to clovey if thats a word)Then I started liking it. Its now my favorite. Also craving ham.
It definitely has a "different" scent, one that you can pick out of a crowd. At first I had mixed thoughts about it, but I quickly grew to like it. I think this was because I was new to wet shaving, and used to the scent of cologne or common aftershave. Bay Rum has a distinctive scent.
Pinaud's Clubman Virgin Island Bay Rum, one of the classics.
I am not a clove fan and find Captain's Choice to be fantastic. It is a bit "sweet" smelling but very pleasant and lingering. Combine it with Mike's Bay Rum soap and you are set for the day.
Gilbert Henry is another great option. I bought my 1st bottle a couple weeks ago and have been very happy with it. For a 1st time bay rum user like myself it's not too strong and feels great after a shave.
Addicted to bay rum here....I have used Dominica Bay Rum Lime and am now working on Captain's Choice Bay Rum (has no clove). Sometimes splashing it on twice a day. I think I'll keep trying different brands though.
Thanks for the suggestions. I have 4 different after shave balms in my rotation but I keep going back to the bay rum. I'll have to order another one soon so I'll check out Dominica and Captain's Choice just to try something else. If you like a balm I think you'll like Gilbert Henry. It's not as thick as some of my other balms (Kiehls, Ahava) but it does the trick!
My Captain's Choice showed up yesterday and I love it. I was a little skeptical after taking a big whiff from the bottle, but when I splashed it on, I smelled what all the hype was about. I'm glad it's not overpowering, it just lingers in the background.
And, Cat O' Nine Tails still has the Bay Rum scent, only just a little different from the standard scent but has that, for some reason, satisfying burn.....even on a smooth no razor burn shave. One of my favorites!!
Howard :)
I have used Captains Choice and it's a great product. Scott is also a great guy and it's always a good thing to support the artisans! Another great Bay Rum aftershave (actually the one I use the most) is Krampert's Bay Rum. I find it to be the most moisturizing AS I have tried and the scent is really nice. Different than the Captain's. No cloves in the Krampert's version and the scent though not overpowering does linger a bit longer. I really like it.
When the weather warms up, I don't find myself reaching for the Bay Rums as much (if ever), but Captain's and Krampert's are both great.
It sounded so cool, I ordered a large bottle of Clubman Virgin Island Bay Rum, because it made me think back to my days in a real barber's chair. Unfortunately, my wife thinks it smells like Raid insect killer. I don't agree, but arguing would be a no-win for me. Oh well.....
