Thread: Aftershaves for sensitive skin

Making your own balm is actually pretty easy and quite satisfying. I use an all natural hand or face lotion,( unscented) you can choose one with the ingredients you like if it matters. Then I add a couple drops of my favorite essential oil for fragrance, mix and enjoy. One of the advantages is the cost, you can save quite a bit of quid and enjoy a customized product to your liking. Your local first grade art class can help with the labels if you ask nice enough!

I myself use Nivea after shave it is anti-bacterial and for sensitive skin. But i have read some really responses. Hope one of them works out for you.

Sensitive skin guy here. I am a big fan of fake-Thayers Witch Hazel with aloe. Nothing wrong with Thayers, by the way, but I fill the empty bottle 2/3 with generic witch hazel, several tablespoons (by eye) of cold-processed aloe, a couple of ounces of isopropyl alcohol (optional) and some essense/scent (optional). I have very happy with 30-drops of lemon essence per bottle.

Nice on the skin after a shave, the scent (or not) of your choice, dries fast, cheap.

When I have wreaked havoc on my face with a straight, I usually use the Nivea After Shave Balm, generic version. The drug store that I get it from (I dont' think I can mention their name here) has their own generic brand sitting right next to the Nivea, same looking container and size. I bought the Nivea first, when that ran out, I tried the generic. I have been unable to detect any difference between the Nivea and the generic; smells the same feels the same, except in price, it's cheaper. I haven't tried a huge variety of balms, The Art of Shaving balm is nice but really pricey. I had a problem with some of the balms really giving me a painful burning senation. No burn at all with the Nivea and no fragrant scent to conflict with cologne you might want to wear. I'm sure there are many other balms out there that perform just as well, just the one I like.

Hi dmnc: I'm not familiar with the "Nestle Boycott" that you mention and I didn't see a post above that you may have been referring to. What is going on with Nestle and what shaving products do they sell? Thanks, Joe

The Navea after shave balm for sensitive skin is a good cost effective one and easy to get. If you want to spend more, there are other options.

I bought a new bottle of Nivea Sensitive a short while ago. It has a new formula and the bottle says "No Drying Alcohol". I guess the old formula must have had some alcohol in it?

I think the Nestle boycott has something to do with ethics and baby formula.

Butters may also help in sensitive skin.

I use a mix of butters. It is made with pure unrefined shea butter, pure unrefined cocoa butter, pure macadamia butter, mango butter and some coconut oil. A very small amount is applied to my hands and then to my face.

I recently found a "Shea Moisture" product "SHEAMOISTURE TEA TREE AFTER SHAVE & BUMP PREVENTER". It was on the discontinue rack so I bought all three bottles. So far I like it. My skin is smooth, moisturized and seems to heal pretty fast using this product. I've had a problem in the past with razor bumps and minor irritation so I thought I'd give it a try. I've been using their "3 Butters Body Wash" and have really seen a difference during the winter months. I don't have to use any moisturizer, lotion to deal with my skin being too dry, (don't like the feeling of stuff on my skin). Seems like every winter I used to end up with itchy, dry skin but no more. It does have a little burn immediately after application but that is gone by the time I've spread it around my head and face.
I have used the Nivea for Sensitive Skin and liked it but I like "splashes" instead of "balms". I think I've started to look forward to the burn.......lol, and the smoothness. Definitely liked the bottle of Ogallala, peppered bay rum. Only problems I had with it... didn't shake it enough to keep the essential oils equally dispersed, (bottom of bottle different than top, alcohol seemed to be up top w/no burn in the end) and the bottle doesn't last forever! My other has been the Pinaud Clubman for the Friday users club. Anyone who claims that Pinaud doesn't have any holding power has never sweated with the stuff on. I started looking around the gym to see who around me might be wearing it......... it was mine really coming out with a bit o cardio.
