I have gotten some 4711 aftershave, supposedly the original Cologne maker in the world, dating back to 1709... Anyone else try it? I'm giving it a shot tonight.

ive just found my aftershave...... its just wow.......
I've used 4711 cologne/aftershave off and on for many years. The scent is nice, but not overpowerinng. I prefer using it during spring/summer.
Glad to see that you like it too.
Gentlemen,
I have used 4711 cologne in the past and liked it for its pleasant citrus notes that do quite well in the summer. It's a refreshing cologne, although as with many aftershaves and colognes with high citrus notes, the fragrance is short lived. It is reasonably priced, too. Good stuff.
Regards,
Obie
obie beat me to it.....
The scent in itself is nice enough, but no lad in his right mind would use it over here: at least in my country it is associated with geriatric ladies only, who use it in such copious amounts that 4711 has become the quintessential 'old ladies' smell'.
I'm afraid that is the case over here in Norway as well.
In fact, if someone accidentaly breaks wind in the company of others, it is usually referred to as a "4711"
Mind you, I'm not trying to make fun of anyone, or the scent of 4711, it is just what I see and hear around me here.
Wow, I guess that ones off the "To Try" list...
I like it. I guess i like the old lady smell. I just am not a fan of old spice, Brut, or any readily available aftershave, and this is different and available.
In Sweden 4711 is a strictly geriatric ladies scent. No exeptions :hmmm:
I have used 4711 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4711_(brand) and Roger & Gallet Jean Marie Farina Eau de Cologne - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia since I was a kid. I do like them both, they are both very refreshing, and affordable. The scent is, as many have indicated, fairly light, ephemeral and fairly neutral, likely a contributing factor for their popularity among the elderly. As scents are very personal, I would not comment on this. One point that I would like to make, on a personal note, is that I try to make most of my choices in life based on my own preference not those dictated by others and this is why I shave with a straight razor. I also like Old Spice and Bay Rum, which may share a similar "designation". The latter is also not used by many as a cologne or after shave in the Caribbean, its place of origin, where it is used for headaches, body frictions and as a desinfectant... I guess I am getting old, let me splash more 4711..... ;-)
Al raz.
4711 is a classic gender-neutral scent that was used by generation after generation. It's affordable because it isn't marketed or promoted; its name & reputation are self-sustaining.
Sometimes old people – men AND women – have style.
If you like 4711 you may like Speick after shave splash as well. It smells a bit like 4711, but a bit more mascule.
Where do you buy this 4711? The way you all talk about it I want to give it a try Thanks.
I got to smell 4711 yesterday at a perfume store in my local mall. I liked and didn't associate the smell with old ladies or farts, so I'll be ordering some soon! I think it would be another nice scent for the spring/summer that will share some "face time" with my new favorite, Proraso!
Hello, Moonshine:
I have always found 4711 a pleasant fragrance, and light, which makes it ideal for summertime. I have never associated the fragrance with "old ladies," whatever that means. If you like it, wear it.
Regards,
Obie
This one's been on my "to try" list for quite some time. For some reason the bottle seems very familiar to me; I get the impression that I've seen it somewhere, perhaps at my grandparents home many years ago? In any event it seems fairly elusive. I've tried local sources and came up empty, and Rasage Poulin used to carry it, although Scott's been out of stock for nearly a year. Oh well, some day.....
4711 has been one of my favorite edt's for a long time. As Obie noted, it is an excellent summertime fragrance.
It is considered one of the very first unisex fragrances.
They also make an aftershave.
It can be purchased in rather large quantities from online discount perfumers.
For those among us with a slight inclination towards nostalgia, remember that it's full name is "4711 Echt Kölnisch Wasser" (4711 Real Cologne Water). Köln (Cologne in english) is a german city, and the home of the original cologne, which (probably) is this very fragrance. Made for over 200 years, and still in production. Like most of the very old concoctions, it is citrus based and was probably intended to be a refreshing balm more than a lasting fragrance, originally. The line of fine men that used this product is very very long.
Incidentally, all fragrances were unisex, back in the day. The notion that some fragrances were unsuitable for men was conceived by Napoleon, who would fine his officers if they wore anything he did not approve.
I'm going to have to male this my next aftershave purchase

I've actually seen it in local Walmarts. Not all of them have it but some do. Large bottle blue label, clear liquid inside. Looks more like a liquor bottle than what you would typically associate with cologne. A fifth of 4711 will set you back about 12 bucks
WHICH WALMART? I'm in the NPR area!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Going to the one on 54/Little Road in a minute to look for this!
Glad I found this old thread. I saw folks discussing 4711 on another forum. Spotted a 50ml bottle at an antique store. For $3 I got my sample bottle. Yes to light citrus scent that fades quickly. So light I wondered if the bottle had been refilled with something else. After reading reviews I'm guessing it's the original contents. Reminds me of another Olde Time formula; M&L's Florida water.
No matter what others think or says, if one like the scent one should wear it.
We all have different taste and what some say is old lady smell doesn't matter.
By the way here are some facts about EDT or "toilet water" as it is refereed to in some context
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eau_de_toilette
Yup, light citrus scent that fades quickly is about it for 4711. Kind of refreshing really.
Bob
It all goes together. Hundred year old razor, tallow soap, 1800's formula aftershave. Glad I can enjoy it with water I don't have to draw from a well.
Bob, where do you get those bottles in your SOTD?

Thank you for the link. I recall seeing that info, but not where. Nearby several local shops that sell essential oils. Witch hazel and alcohol are available. The net's full of home made recipes, and I'm beginning to develop my preferences.
I like them bottles Bob uses... it's all coming together.
If you live in area with a christmas tree store (for those who don't know the store its a general type store) they sell 4711 if your looking for it never tried it my self
