Talc

Hey all,

I use (and rather like) alcohol-based aftershaves. I also like experimenting (who doesn't?). I keep seeing talc in the shaving section at my local drugstore, and I also read about it occasionally online. So what do you guys think? Do any of you use talc post-shave, and if you do, what do you think?

Sure sometimes. Especially in humid weather.. Find an old neck duster brush and apply talc of choice. Tap over the sink, then brush on to your neck and face. Reduces shine too.

Most talc these days has been replaced. I think corn starch is what they use. I guess there were health concerns. Talc is a rock you know and it's just ground up to make the powder. If you breath it in it can cause lung issues down the road.

Bust up some sidewalk chalk with a hammer. Works great! The blue leaves a nice Smurf-like hue.

The possible health issues with talcum powder use result from the fact that talc and asbestos often occur together naturally in the deposits mined. However, since 1976 US industry standards have essentially removed the risk of co-occurance in talc products. The IARC currently classifies talc not containing asbestos as "not classifiable as to carcinogenicity in humans" and gives it a 2a rating. For perspective, this is the same rating given cellphone usage.

Note that talc production in some parts of Europe and most of Asia is not subject to the same quality control standards as in the US so it might be wise to avoid things made from materials mined there.
