I have never been able to use that stuff. It either made my face beak out red or it would cause the dust from work stick to it and make me come home looking a like Al Jolson in black face.
By the way I may be able to go down into Mexico and get you some pills for the metro sexual disorder thing :<0)
I've been using St Ives Apricot scrub for years now. That stuff is great. I use it once or twice a week in the shower.
I can use the Anthony Logistics scrub everyday. I find it works very well for freeing ingrown hairs. I can feel the whiskers pop free from the skin when I use it (I shave every morning). Be careful to avoid the scrubs that contain crushed walnut shells and volcanic pumice, they can be very harsh.
It's not cheap, but I get about 100 applications from a tube.
Jack Back and Molton Brown are both excellent facial scrubs. I like using either before going to bed.
Have fun.
While it may not be considered a facial scrub it is a face wash, Men-U. Also I use Baxter of California Clarifying Mask. I was allergic to Pre de Provence Shave Soap in Tin and broke out bad and the Baxter Mask cleared it right off. Also I like the Men-U as it has tea tree oil so you can feel that clean feeling very similar to menthol but not as harsh IMO. If you haven't picked up I have sensitive skin :D
Cousin Cletus just uses his belt sander and some mild sandpaper around 2000 grit with minimal pressure and plenty of water and you'd never know he was 65 by looking at him.
Baking soda - cheap an effective, I usually use this once a week, get my best shaves after scrubbing my face with this.
been using St. Ives apricot scrub for years. always did the trick for me.
I started experimenting with baking soda as a scrub last night. Water + baking soda is OK. I'm now looking into baking soda + liquid soap. Currently I'm using some Dr Brown's liquid soap. I'm still working on getting the right mix. I want a very thick paste with a good abrasive effect.
After getting involved with this post, I got to thinking about the face scrub I use. Last night I started looking for inexpensive and effective face scrubs to buy. I then starting thinking about homemade scrubs, since I like to make my own stuff at times. I saw baking soda scrubs listed in many DIY sites. A lot of the sites mentioned using lemon juice, but a user commented that she uses liquid soap, so I went down that route.
I mix sugar and washing up liquid for removing hand grime.

This and a wire brush really gets the crap out of the pores!
And I think GOJO leaves a rather pleasant orange scent to boot:)
How about this:
They do exfoliate well though. But are better used on tougher skins like on your back. I usually use a terry cloth washing glove though. If you don't use fabric conditioner the terry cloth gets a bit harder and does a terrific job.
I bit the bullet and invested $2.45 in a box of baking soda, poured a decent palmful out, put in a pump of soap and away I went.
The scrubbieness wasn't as scrubby as I was expecting My face was squeaky (literally) clean at the end. I liked the result, but wanted more of an exfoliating sensation, I am just weird like that. Before anyone suggests sandblasting or something, I will say that I don't want it too hurt, just feel like it is there. Maybe I will add something grittier today.
I had heard that you can use it to clean your teeth too, so I gave that ago, just to compound this experement I had also been reading about tooth soaps, so as I have a bar of natural soap I thought soap up the toothbrush first, then some baking soda, scrubby scrub scrub. The end result was squeaky clean teeth. As a word of warning do not use sandalwood scented soap for toothbrushing, it works but the taste is not great, esp in conjunction with the slight salty taste of the soda.
Soda not too abrasive on the enamel?
Hmmmm, I guess I will find out :). I think you can buy baking soda based toothpastes, it I might check. I woke up an hour or so ago after 6 hours sleep and my mouth feels fairly fresh, more so than If I had used regular toothpaste. i need to find out the brand of mint soap that some guys use for their teeth.
Ok yahoo answers says it is ok, in fact better than toothpaste. There is no flouride or sugar in it. It whitens teeth etc. The only downside is the additional salt you are intaking.
Many years ago, I started using a product called Pernox. It disappeared from the market and seemed to have been replaced by Multi-Scrub. That too went away and I started using Apri. Guess what? It disappeared also. St. Ives Apricot took its place. With each successive product, the consistency got a bit less scratchy and the smell improved. St. Ives seems to be a good one. And strangely, it's still around!
As far as an applicator, is nothing finer than real sea sponges,Premium grades will last years.
Premium Wool Sponges
Just make sure there's no little creature still living inside.
I've been using The Body Shop's Maca Root scrub... I went in for the shave cream and they had a special going where it was buy one get one free, and because I bought something for SWMBO as well, I got the face wash, too...
Pretty good, IMO, but that scrub can be irritating if you use too much pressure.
*Edit: I should add that the only reason I got it was because of the sale... otherwise, it's just a bit of Dr. Bronner's for me...
Update on baking soda toothpaste experement, I gave been brushing twice a day with baking soda a d water. The Saltiness takes a bit of getting used to, but my teeth feel nice and clean, as a bonus my morning mouth gackiness has mostly gone away. I can only put it down to the toothpaste from evening brushing, which would make sense if it contains sugar.
My teeth might even be a bit whiter, though it is a bit soon to tell.
All the best,
Ed.
Sounds like your experiment had great results, Ed. I may just have to give it a try myself. :tu
Here in the US, Arm & Hammer makes toothpaste with some baking soda in it. I used to buy it years ago, but stopped because it is more expensive then regular toothpaste.
Also, I've heard of people using sand and their finger to brush their teeth, so I figured baking soda has got to be easier on the teeth. :rofl2:
Ed, I use baking soda once in a blue moon to brush my teeth. I think it's a little to abrasive to use all the time. To help with that saltiness try mixing it with your regular toothpaste. I know here I can get baking soda tooth paste elminating the need to do that. But again probably cheaper to buy a box.
edit: looks like I was beat to the Arm & Hammer tooth paste..........
I never like the taste of the baking soda toothpaste that is sold in the us .. It's ok but not something I would use everyday.. But now I believe they have actually made the same toothpaste in many different flavors. My wife informed me we actually had st Ives apricot facial scrub in the house.. It was buried under her other 100 facial products.. So ill be giving it a go tomorrow so ill let guys know how it goes.
I believe they have been using baking soda for toothpaste way before my time..
It appears that my baking soda experement has been running for a month and a half or so now, and my teeth are definately whiter, and I drink about 5 really quite large coffees a day. The only comment I have had was when I used baking soda at home and my wife said my breath smelled odd, but I think the stuff we had there was a bit "stale". I do keep a tube of real toothpaste in the cupboard but have only used it once. I should also say that I used to have slightly sensitive teeth and have not had any problems.
Comet and a Brillo! brave man! Si. it taste like crap! but as Ed pointed out, effective stain remover for the teeth too. Hydrogen peroxide will do the same thing as far as whitening teeth but doesn't taste any better. A lot of these thing's are used in beauty products sold for higher dollars - there just put in a pretty bottle, and a few extra ingredients, maybe a nicer scent, but if you look at these "new" products, the base ingredients are something simple like Witch Hazel, Baking soda, Hydrogen Peroxide when they're really effective and really cheap all by their self. Saving you 15% in 15 minutes................oh wait that's, that dam commercial. We are all so gullible today, they do a very good job of separating us from our cash
@edhewitt,
I tried it last night and it was effective in whitening. *I*, however, would not make it a daily thing after reading up on it on the net. From what I can gather, routine users of baking soda, hyperoxide, strawberries, etc., are likely to have accelerated recession of gums... I don't know that its 100 percent true, but I think I'll err on the side of caution and maybe use it once a week or something. YMMV.
