Personally I'm gonna go with shotgun every time.

That doesn't make it a a better weapon, though, it's just your choice based on your preferences and the scenarios you envision facing. I'm sure someone who actually knows about guns could come up with a situation in which a pistol is undeniably better or a person for whom a pistol would undeniably be a better choice.
The same is true with scuttles. If you take longer shaves and face lather, a brush scuttle is the better choice because it has better heat retention (much less surface area) and better contact with the brush. If you want a bowl to lather in and take quicker shaves, the heat loss of a big bowl scuttle won't really matter and the lather area will be more important.
Avast holli4pirating. Are ye ready for talk like a pirate day on the 19th? uh?....well neither am I. But I will be, just like I'll be ready for any scallywags that breech my front rail with my pistol...er/or....revolver. My shotguns will work just fine of course, it's just easier for me to use the handgun. It is also my choice to use a pestle (of motar and pestle fame) to hold my shaving soap. I fill it with hot water and leave it while I brush my teeth. By the time I am done rinsing the pearly whites, and the partials, :) ,the granite is nice and warm. With a hot brush I can now get a good, warm lather going and shave. I have a full beard so it is a little faster for me, but I shave everyday. I have seen the old and new versions of the scuttles and I bet they work great. For me I keep it simple.
Dirty Bird every time... the vendor is lovely to deal with and custom designed mine with grooves for ease of lathering. Can't recommend her enough. Nuff said.
I only have one, you can see it here: http://straightrazorpalace.com/misce...-scuttles.html . It is not for sale, it was made to my specs by a friend. However, I am no scuttle designer... I rarely ever use it because I am fond of facelathering. I think that it works well considering its size. That is one thing I do not like about most lathering scuttles: they are rather small. Perhaps it will see more use now in the coming months as the cold weather approaches but I think that a a scuttle that allows me to keep the brush warm would be more appropriate for what need. I figure that I would give you my take on scuttles.
Al raz.
Here is a picture of my DirtyBird 1.5 scuttle with the web design. You can also see in the picture where I had Julie put a "dribble port" in the side so that I can tilt the scuttle away from myself to add a bit of water to my lather...

you might find a scuttle at the local antique store, but if your not looking for anything fancy you could always use an old coffiee mug they work pretty nice.
that dribble port thing looks awesome.. good idea.. i only have a gardening scuttle.. but i hardly use it.. i'm more into the facelathering.
I use this type of shaving mug pretty much every day it's designed for face lather. warm the brush in the wide spout and warm the soap at the same time. I normaly fill it before it take a bath or shower I also make sure the soap is also wetted a bit as well. I still use it to make a warm lather in a muhle bowl which I sit in an old enamel cup filled with hot water this heats up the lather and the brush so every pass gets warmer.
I like the old shave mug its something my late father used to use it's a nice connection to have.
Evin,
I was looking at the scuttles and im a little confused on where your brush goes, in the top or the side?
