Hi,
Has anyone tried producing shave oil? Thanks.
you mean preshave oil?
there are many threads on that, I used to make
2 castor oil :1 olive oil, with a drop of glycerin and EO of choice.
No I want to use it while shaving.
Stefan's formula looks good, although I'd drop the glycerin, as it would seem counter-productive (it's absorbed).
Mineral oil is another possibility, although not liked well on philosophical grounds by the petrophobes here.
1/3 castor oil, 2/3 less viscous oil of your choice. I started out using olive oil, but moved on to more easily adsorbed oils (and it is adsorbed, not absorbed for those who care about linquistic niceness). Grapeseed oil is particularly good.
After you've skinned a badger for his hair you take him and squeeze him out and you get great shave oil.:)
ferroburak,
I have used jojoba and olive oil in various proportions to enrich lather, and also for use in the 'oil pass' when using safety razors.
jojoba/olive/castor and other oils seem to perform very similarly, so take your pick and give it a whirl :)
Mr Ham ('LeisureGuy') has given a formula in his book (Leisureguy's Guide to Gourmet Shaving: Shaving Made Enjoyable); this has the benefit of you being able to eat the remaining stock oils :)
2 parts Almond oil
2 parts Avocado oil
2 parts Olive oil
1 part Grapeseed oil
1 part Macadamia nut oil
1-2 drops essential oil(s) (for fragrance)—or however much you want
Have fun !
Best regards
Russ
The glycerin is ABsorbed by the skin, and disappears into it. You might argue that castor oil is ADsorbed on the surface of the skin (without penetrating), but I think it's a stretch to think of an oil interacting (being bound to) a surface in the manner that ADsorption implies. I don't object to the usage, however.
"Petrolphobe" is certainly better than "petrophobe", and probably what I meant to type.
I have tried grapeseed oil, avocado oil, almond oil and olive oil. To me, performance wise, they are all similar. In fact, I notice no difference in my shave when I use preshave oil. I use it occasionally just for a little added moisture.
My favorite combo is just straight almond oil with a few drops of peppermint oil. I guess you could use any EO, but to me, almond oil is the perfect consistency for a preshave oil. Not too thin, not too thick and not too greasy.
