I did a google search on "bay rum" and came across a few sites with recipes for making bay rum aftershave, both alcohol based and non-alcohol. It looks kind of interesting. Has anyone tried that? How did it turn out? I'm thinking I'll spend the same amount on materials to make my own (just lots more of it) as I would spend on something I can give the "sniff test" to right then and there.

To me, bay rum looks and smells like dilute Angostura bitters. Not sure why you couldn't mix it with water and alcohol to your preferred strength.
Any specific site in general from your google masta search? List them and some people can try the same one to see what they both think of the results.

If I was to make one I think i would choose the second one..
I have a version made by Axel Schaab. I've also added some peppermint oil and get a little chill from that for a while. It's really nice When it's all gone I'll be making my own as well.
I mixed up a batch last Thursday night using the recipe found here:

I've opend it a couple of times and it is interesting to smell how it changes over time. By next week I think it will have a nice scent. I'll report back then.

I ran across that first site that you posted a year or two ago and never tried it out. It was just easier to go to the local health food store and pick up a bottle of Dominica Bay Rum (my favorite). If you try any of the receipes out, let us know. I might just have to give it a bit of a go myself besides, it'd give me an excuse to go out an pick up a nice bottle of rum and it can't hurt to have that around.:tu

Just a note, I used witch hazel in place of vodka because I had it on hand. Not sure what difference that would make in the end product.

Another cheapie is Lucky Tiger's Bay Rum. It's in their classic line up.

The stuff I made myself turned out very well, I think. It has a nice mellow scent that isn't too powerful. You can make out the orange and spices a bit but no one thing stands out.
It didn't burn at all which was surprising since I had managed to cut myself pretty well for the first time. The smell didn't linger much that I could tell. I definitely like it and would make it again.

That is good to know that it does smell not bad, I will have to try it out now..
I have used the Dominica from Classic Shaving. It is really good. Great sent and a lot of natural oils.

Just mixed up my first batch using the second recipe.
I used 50% witchhazel and 50% vodka as the base liquid.
It smells pretty sweet and sickly at the moment. But slightly better after it had been left overnight. I hope it will improve.
How is this stuff supposed to smell? Does it have a sweet scent?
I'll let you know how it progresses.
