Not sure if this has been brought up before but I had a thought, since some preshaves use alcohol, could I use my aftershave as a preshave? I've used oil based before and it works great I just think it feels a hair gross and I'm thinking of switching to a different type of preshave treatment. Just thought I would throw this question out there before I go and buy something preshave specific.
I use this for preshave every shave, grease-less, washes off without residue, little to no scent, cheap, & most of all softens the whiskers.

Aftershave AS a pre-shave? Interesting. What sort of aftershave? I have Madame Scodioli's 'Step Right Up' and it's very oily, but not really the consistency I need for a pre-shave. I believe a pre-shave's job is to soften the beard, condition the skin, provide slickness and delight the senses. Generally an aftershave's job is a little different, in that it doesn't need to soften the beard nor provide slickness...
Proraso pre-shave cream is also an aftershave cream, I used to use it as a pre-shave every single shave (not often as an AS), now I only use water as a pre-shave treatment, generally after a shower.

To me, a preshave should soften the hairs to make them easier to cut. Easier to cut equals backing off on the pressure. No pressure means a comfortable shave.
As far as other products, you have Castle Forbes Preshave. It is closer in consistency to a gel. It is expensive as heck and smells strange though.
Body Shop's Maca Root Wash Off Oil is not as dense as other oils I have used. Smells a lot better than Castle Forbes Preshave.
Also, I have used Jojoba Oil before. It was not as bad a preshave oils as far as being gunky. Jojoba is used in conditioners and really helps to soften hair.
Now I mainly just focus on showering before shaving and really scrubbing the whiskers with soap and shampoo.
Well, first, Udder Cream is a great balm but I've never used it as a pre shave. That said, I'm with Mephisto in that I focus on using a good soap to prep my whiskers by giving them a long massaging lather. I'm not sure preshaves really help, other than to improve the manufacturers bottom line.

I think the Duke, just rolled over in his grave.
i just use my regular shaving soap for a pre-shave soap; lather it up and massage it in with my fingers for a few minutes; apply some more and then start the shave. It works like a charm, for me.
