i just use my regular shaving soap for a pre-shave soap; lather it up and massage it in with my fingers for a few minutes; apply some more and then start the shave. It works like a charm, for me.

I've tried them all and never saw any real result from any of them, pre-shave creams, oils, etc. I splash water on my face, lather up quickly and get to shaving.
