Default Has anyone made Bay Rum?

I'd like to give it a shot. I love rum and I like smelling good. But I've read somewhere that it is not ordinary bay leaves (the kind you put in soup). Does anyone know where I might get these leaves or the essence of them?

    Thanks in advance!

I make my own and like it a lot. You can view my recipe in this old thread :http://straightrazorpalace.com/presh...tml#post909047

You want West Indian Bay leaves or essential oil. I had a tough time finding the leaves so ordered a small 0.5 oz quantity of the essential oil on ebay. You only use a few drops at a time so I am still using this 0.5 oz vial. There are various soapmaking websites that stock many essential oils and also have the Bay essential oil (Google is your friend here).

    Good luck!

Default Has anyone made Bay Rum?

I've made my own, took about 6 weeks but it turned out nice. I put a few extra sticks of cinnamon and drops of West Indies bay oil in mine because I like it a bit stronger.

I posted a thread somewhere also.

    Thanks guys!

Is there a specific type of rum that should be used - cheap and cheerful or 20 years old?

The recipe I found ironically didn't call for any rum. I know there are some out there though.

MattW's recipe included some white Jamaica Rum - but I don't drink that stuff - only the dark rum. I can't imagine buying a full bottle of white rum just to make bay rum with... Looks like Taylor of Old Bond Street will be getting more of my money

Or I'll have to find that 'rumless bay rum' recipe you mentioned ZeroCool!

    Cheers!

You could cook with the left overs. Nothing like onions sauteed in rum to liven up your burger . . .

But wouldn't that burn all the 'goodness' out of the rum???

    Nice idea though....

You won't get a high from it, but the sugar caramelizes the onions nicely, and the flavor remains . . . Mmmmmmmmmmmm G.U.D. - Good!!

Actually it was the golden colored rum that I used and worked best. The first time I used the very dark brown rum and the aftershave turned out kind of boozy, sticky and sweet.
The lighter stuff worked much better. You could probably skip the rum if you don't have it on hand.
