It's called shokwood. That's the brand name. It's a hybrid of stabilized burl and colored resin.
It's beautiful stuff but it has a couple of issues.
Most of it is sold in knife handle lengths so too short for razor scales. It's also almost always out of stock and the guy who makes it doesn't respond to emails. And when used in thin pieces like razor scales, it's pretty fragile
I'm currently working on a showpiece knife for the Gembloux knife show. I'm not manning a table, but I'm staying with a group of master smiths in an old farmhouse and need something to pass round for show and tell. I'll be posting pics later. :D
Oh, thanks for the heads-up. I'd like to find some in razor scale length size, like the two here in this section. I think shell is probably my favorite for what I would consider a high-end straight. Ok. Good luck at the knife show. Where is it? Europe?
Belgium. It's an international show where you'll find Americans, people from the UK, and people from all countries between Spain and the Ukraine. A couple of years ago Mike got me introduced into a group of US and UK smiths he was staying with in Gembloux. I was told I could crash there if I wanted so I stayed and made some new friends. Since then it is a yearly event for me and I stay with the same people and have a good time. I still don't have a table.
There are a couple of reasons for that. For me it is much more an opportunity to socialize and hang out. And 99% of the people buying stuff there are knife people, not razor people. The thought of having hundreds of ignorant people handling my razors and doing god knows what to them, doesn't appeal to me. And one of the nice things is that there are many people sellin ghandle material so it's always a good idea to search around and dig through the bins with cut-offs looking for bargains.
How did the knife show go? You said you were going to spend the night at a house with other smiths? Show us the knife you made for the show.
Lol I was talking about the show in a couple of months. I always talk in weeks and months. The things I do are never quick or immediate.
Earlier today a handful of potatoes were viciously attacked by a Bruno Blade !!
The screaming of the peels could be heard for blocks !!
Here is my recent order from Bruno. 6/8 Wootz steel with bone scales. It is amazing! Really smooth shaving. It is by far the best steel I have experienced. Bruno is an amazing craftsman.Attachment 280495Attachment 280496
I'm glad you love it, as I will want a wootz steel razor someday soon. I am having an 11/8 O2 made for me buy him. I am very, very grateful that he gives people like us the opportunity to own a great razor at such an affordable price and all I have to do is polish it out and provide the scales! Wonderful AND BRILLIANT!
