Original Gold Mandarin Scales;

Do we know if the Gold Mandarin is considered Lifetime? Thank you for the pic Chevhead, your one is super sweet!. Thank you!
I don't believe so Shub33.
There are Two Lifetimes (Three if you count the removable blade one) that I know of.
The Lifetime with the Chicken looking duck:

And the Reaper blade, which is what most people are looking for:

Wow! and Wow! Thank you again. :)
Finally added an original Reaper with good scales and the correct leather pouch.

This is the club I most wanted to get in when I joined this site. I now have a wonderedge and goldedge on the way. Will post photos when they arrive.

Finally, after three weeks my ducks have arrived! Customs nightmare but nonetheless, here they are. Only one photo but so happy to have received them. Looking forward to shaving with the wonderedge in the morning http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...081dfc7d3d.jpg
Happy to be part of the club!

Still building my collection, from top right; Goldedge, Wonderedge, Wonderedge, Wonderedge, Special No. 1, Dwarf, Satinedge, 8/8 Goldedge top left, Satinwedge bottom right.

Nice !! keep an eye on that Satinedge. The scales are awful dark. Think cool and dry for all of them.
And Chev that wedge looks suspicious too ! I know you keep an eye on yours. If not you know I will always look at it everyday if you want me to hold it for you :<0)
Attachment 262954Attachment 262955Attachment 262956Attachment 262957I picked this Satinedge up off of eBay recently. I haven't come across many with the gold tang stamps. Anyone have any info on that?
Hard to say without holding it but it could be all original or a darn nice restore. It looks to me like it has seen some buff. The thing about Duck tangs is the finish is the first thing to go. The Satinedge had a satin finish and was somewhat more durable than say the Goldedge, Wonderedge or Special #1. The hand forged should last forever for obvious reasons. As for color, gold was typical on Satins and some of the black finished tangs as I recall. And color is one of the easiest things to put back on a tang.
The original Satin finish is a streaked sand paper kind of look that is very fine and looks purposeful. The streaking goes from toe to heel in direction. It covered the same areas that all the other tang finishes did and although restores look great some miss the mark on what lines these finishes actually followed. Someday I will post detail shots of these lines. Just waiting to win the lotto so I can devote more time to it :<0)
Thanks so much for the info! I love the ducks and how intricate the design details were (like the different tang finishes) not the mention the amazing shavers they are. Im glad there's a group where I can espouse my love for all things duckie!
To add to the party a bit here is the NOS Goldedge I have

It's not in great shape but it's cheap, and better it go to someone here who likes DD's than end up in the trash.
I know I'm not screwing up somebody else's bid here because it's a Buy It Now at $15!
My new addition a Wonderedge Ducky. Just arrived and is mint condition. Going to take it out for a test shave in a couple of minutes.Attachment 290856. Just finished the shave, and it was smooth. Not used to the smaller blades and I'll probably take it to my Coticule to see if I can smooth out the blade more then it is now. Doesn't really need it but the stones are like guns. If you have them you always want to use them.
That's a nice one, the Wonderedge was my favourite Duck, the only razor that frequently made me bleed, the Goldedge I had was a real biter, the Wonderedge I could somewhat tame, when I got a few 3 pass shaves under my belt with the Goldedge, I declared victory and sold it's evil soul.
Be careful, they are biters.
Sheesh, long time since I've seen this thread, makes me think of Chevhead, The King of the Ducks, good times....
Congrats on the Wonderedge, and let us know how the shave went.....:-)
I have two Ducks. And I have to say, I am sold. My Wonderedge shows some signs of use (although it looks better in real life than the picture), and my Goldedge is mint :D

Hey I have a question about tang finishes and details.
What is the final word on the factory finish on the Satinedge tang and the Satinwedge tang?
What are the factory colors of the tang stamps?
I read through a bunch of posts but am finding it hard to determine the final consensus on this.
Thanks for the info!
The tang is a satin finish and I have seen black or gold in the stamp as I can remember. There maybe some in blue. The confusion may come from restores calling the finish satin when you can clearly see scratches or a sandblast type finish. The true finish is more of a dull even look and hard to replicate. I will look through my stuff and see if I can locate some originals that will show in pics :<0) I can't seem to find a lot of my before shots for some reason.
Thank you Sir! Much appreciated!
So a satin finish with some metal etch? Or do I need to sand blast it?
Do you think the ducks were a different color?
I have questions on other Ducks, but I'll wait on those.
Thanks again!
Maybe a chemical type etch yes. Hard to describe really. It is just a dull even finish. I think the only color on Stainedge or Wedge razor were black or gold. I think blue was exclusive to the Goldedge. Now this is all just memory and would have to go through many photos to confirm. I am heading out of town to work this week or I would give it a look. I did spend 3 days getting all my razor pics together and deleting all the duplicates. The things you go through when you replace a 10 year old pc. One of my new years goals is to get them all online in 1 place. The other goal is to stop buying so many razors. We shall see what this year brings ! The Satinedge is an early model that had many different looks going back to Just bresnick days. I even have some Twin Duck Satinedge. You spot what I am saying on e-bay if you look close at some good pic from great sellers. No sand blasting :<0) There is a process that eludes my memory right now but I have a friend that is an expert at it. Abrasive substance I just can't remember the name of right now.
Thank you for the info!
I'll wait for any further suggestions on the colors and etch, as I've got a Reaper I'm rebuilding that will take me some time at my snail-pace.
What I'm doing now with the specifics inquiries is to prep for the next Ducks in line. My intent is to create a rebuilt Duck set.
What you wrote about the variation in style makes sense, I've seen more than one version of the Satins, it looks like there have been changes to the style over time.
The thing is about the colored lettering... Is that I never see any color in those letters except on restores.
Maybe my experience is limited on these Ducks but I figured that I would have seen little bits of color still left in those letters. I haven't. ...except maybe for black.
Must be easy to wipe off?
That is what I was saying. I have some originals with the color still in them. Black and gold.I got the day off,,,rain day.
So,,,, here you have some we can look through.
Attachment 300635
and up close is the one with gold color,,,, Black is a definite color that was used in many of the Duck tangs. You can see the Satin finish ? And what I mean by hard to describe.
Attachment 300636
some others you might like to see that are satin
Attachment 300637
Satin or Silk feels the same right ? Actually the poor thing is swiss cheesy so I haven't tried to do anything but stop the degrading.
Attachment 300638
To all my old friends you can see I am not dead :<0) And I am still buying razors. I just don't have the time to spend on them like i did. Hopefully that will change some this year.
Good to see you, Pups......Get em outa those scales, willya? Send them to me and I will do it for you, quarantine them and send them back!
Some are an experiment. Coat with stuff and see what happens. Some lay open all the time. They are safe believe me, I keep an eye on them. LOL you should see the other workbench. Specials all apart with pins and washers everywhere brass soaking, used sand paper laying half wrapped around my blocks. Trying to source the old yeller in new acrylic. May have to pour it myself which is another project requiring time and space.
Good to know and again, good to see you here. :tu
As the cellrot gets these blades and inlays, they are beginning to disappear. I don't remember when I saw a Goldedge on SOTD?
Maybe Max did, months back. Stuff used to be commonplace.
Best to get the inlays off, get the blade best it can be, and eventually do the scales.
Hat's off to those of you who actually do it! :chapeau
Wow! You have a bunch of Ducks!
Okay I can see that I was wrong about the colors. Definitely there.
With the etching (or what ever it is) it does seem more subtle than typical etching, or somewhat of a matte finish.
Hopefully your experiments continue!
So those pics lead me to assume I need to pic the right colors for the model.. or does it not matter so much? My rebuilds are not going to be true restorations, just figured I'd try to learn the correct history to help my decision.
Silk Edge? I've never seen that one before! I've been making a list, seems some of these are rare.
I really hope you find the time, as Tom said, it seems that if those scales need to be changed.. you are definitely needed to help save those pieces of history.
Man those are some great projects you have on your bench! So much great work. Thanks for taking the time to post those pics and the info.
If you find out any more info, I'll be following the developments.
:beer1:
A quick thought on the etching before bed.
I'm not sure what tests have been done yet, but I remember a friend describing some things to me about achieving various effects.
iirc the etching was rubbed on in a polishing method and cleaned off.. Anyway I'll have to look that up.
I kind of specialize in Ducks. You can go to my profile and see my personal 7 day set in photos. I also have some info on restoring Reapers in there somewhere. You may notice I don't always stick to the "original" theme. I do sometimes but not more than once :<0) Crocus finish is the exact term I was looking for but it is not as easy as wipe, rub, done. I watched the process developed by a friend of mine and I would have to rack my brain to figure out the best method to pull it off. Involves wax, dust, grits, scratches, felt, leather, light, hard, speed, directions. Ah heck there you go, all you need to figure it out LOL I am sure it will be on a web site someday.
The lettering on my satinwedge is red but there is a regular polished finish on it no satin finish.

A nice one just hit the SOTD...............
https://sharprazorpalace.com/shave-d...ml#post1857349
That's quite a nice collection of Ducks!
I had assumed that the satin finish was a bit less complicated. Lol. That one you describe seems very important to get the right order of the process, with added finesse! Thanks 10Pups!
I am sure the original process was very simple. Just not sure what that was and haven't even thought about duplicating it. (okay that is a lie, I do have ideas LOL ) What I can say is that any of the tang finishes on ducks will wipe right off with polish. Except for the hand-forged and that also has some shading color to accent the hammer marks.
1 New Years resolution of mine is to get all my Ducks in order, cleaned up and posted online. Sounds simple eh ? You may be surprised at how big a job that really is :<0)
