Some razors were made with guards that are removable. I have several. Some will have grooves cut in them to trim hair rather than to completely shave it off & others are there to protect the blade when not in use. I have both. Genco has one called a Safedge. I just realized last night that I have two Torrey's called a Little Guard that have guards on them.They all have small shorter blades on them but are nice little straight razor's. Below are some I own. The top one is a Curley from England which I restored. The next one is a Genco Safedge. Last is the Torrey Little Guard:

OK, if that's what he means, then no. All the ones I've seen like that have been much later than the stub tails in this thread.

I have a W&B stubby out getting restored right now. When it returns I will be back.

An attempt to make the razor safer. They existed from the late 18th century (1790s). I have some from the 19th century and the 20th century, but I really want one of the originals.

Hey everyone,I'm a new member,but an old fan! I've been collecting, restoring, and honing for 5 years now and have been on a purchasing spree lately. I recently bought a "John Barber "stubby and was wondering if any of the stub tail gurus could help me to validate it's authenticity cause I can't find any square and compasses anywhere on it. I was hoping it was because it was one of his earliest blades. I'm tryin to get a picture on here but all I have is my android. Could someone fill me in without a picture???

I have a book that says John Barber was cautioning the public about counterfeit copies of his razor's were going around because his name was so celebrated back then. I have one but I just got it out & it says Iohn Barber. It was either stamped wrong or not stamped clearly with the J.
It also appears that it was not stamped straight because part of the upper & lower portion of the makers name isn't as clear.

As far as I know, none of the wooden Perret guards survive. But, by the end of the 18th century, metal guards were available, and that is what I am looking for.

I am lucky to have all three.
