[QUOTE=rhensley;1496238]Tortoiseshell (from the hawksbill sea turtle as Martin has pointed out previously) was a very costly item at that time, always has been I suppose. Razor makers and others (hair-slide makers, spectacle frame makers, comb makers, etc, etc) needed a cheaper alternative and began to use blond horn (or bleached horn) and treat it with various dyes and chemicals to make it look like tortoiseshell, but at a fraction of the price. The item was called 'spotted' at the time. We now call it mock-tortoiseshell. Badly executed examples can be spotted immediately as fakes, but good examples replicate the markings of the real thing extremely well.
They are both composed of the stuff that forms hair and fingernails - keratin, so they take on exactly the same finish when worked and polished. They also suffer from the same sorts of ageing (delamination, brittleness, flaking, etc) and the same pests attack them and leave bug-bites.
Unless you have had experience with the real thing and have the specimen under consideration in your hand, you can not tell the difference without an experts documentation of it. And by photos alone.... pah!
Regards,
Neil
Your completely right there Mr. M. Photos are very deceiving though. If you think about the time these were made and as stated the cost of Tortoiseshell then treated horn would a good guess. Then again It would be nice to really have a set of scales from that period in time. It's like Ivory I really like the looks of it but wouldn't want a new set made of it.
I have read somewhere that the oldest depiction of a folding razor was in a painting from, the 17th century? Does anyone know anything about this?
I finally have a real pre 1800 razor coming soon. I'll post a picture once I'm sure I won it. I'm very excited. I have a few 1830 razors and some 1840-50's but I really love anything older than 1800.
If anyone is looking to get rid of one or two nice 1700's blades I am in the market. You can be sure they will have a good home and oggled over daily.
Should add mine to the 1700's Show.
French razor, listing has it 1730-1800.

Good Andrew, I'm glad you added it!
Here is the one I won. French razor, fleur de Lis with crown. I couldn't find any information.
Looks like it should hone up well. I can't wait to shave with it.

That's a beautiful straight!!!!!
I'm definately stoked. I almost bit on a couple others recently but the fleur de lis one is in much better condition and about the same size.
I had a question about jimping. I have seen two no tail razors with no/very little blade & tang definition but with what look like jimps on the bottom. Was anyone doing jimping pre 1800?
Hi, you sure know this page, your razor without tang, plane scales made of bone or ivory and silver or silvered washers is quite comun in the firs years of XIXth century in France, you could see diferent examples like yours here, Dream_Razor
If you don't mind, would you please tell us how much it set you back?
Is the first time, but I can nor undertand....sorry...and google do not help me
What did the razor cost you?
Oh! I habe onli one, not the box, obbiusly, the box is quite expensive...jejejeje...., The one I have is marked wit an A crowned and has tail, another model, but in the rest is the same, I can not remenber, here in Spain razors are sometimes too cheep and sometimes tooo expensives....I do no know hera somebody that collect them. I think this one consted around 10 or 20 euros. Normally I´m not used to pay more. regards
Never posted on this thread before but Ive got a number of stub-tails..
Ill start with my best :D
Got these in the mail in a Lot. A Gray Cast Steel. Dont know much about this manufacturer.
And this strange little corn cutter??? It is made by Kippax. Kippax died in 1775 I believe and then his son was making razors with Nowill (Nowill & Kippax). So I think this little beauty is from 1775 or before. But I dont know for sure.
Anybody have any ideas? Seen one of these before?
I was so excited to see that both these blades are in such great condition!
Thanks for looking!
MikeT.
Here are some I dug out. I don't know if all belong here but I do think the first two do.
It is hard to make out the mark but to me appears to be like a pick axe with a star.

This one appears to be an I. Barber but it might have been made after the early 1800's

(I) Johannes Barber. Engleterre England?..seems to be a later overstrike.
... ... ... about that Kippax, anybody seen a stub-tail corn razor before? Is that what it is?
I think he is talking about foot's corn, and tiny razors that were used to remove it.
I honestly don't know if it is one or not. Could be, or could be a sort of travel razor..
Unusual anyway IMHO.
Yeah, I guess I misunderstood. Thanks.....
Thanks Thaeris, people looked, liked, and moved on.. not one person even replied. In post 138 with the pics I asked what people thought .. a stub-stall corn cutter, ever seen one? But it seems people that visit this thread must be more voyeuristic and less interactive. I was a bit disappointed. First time visiting this thread. I'll probably just post on a different one.
Definitely would be cool to think of that little razor as a little travel razor! I like that better than the more likely foot corn remover... lol
Thanks again for the reply!
I see it now MikeT. I never even got an email notification for when you posted that one or I would have remembered it! Then when a post was made I went back some posts but didn't see anything. Sorry. Maybe I'm better off on a different one! And no pity party here or feelin' sorry for myself. No special treatment expected. Just nothing going right it seems lately. Sorry guys, I didn't mean to disappoint anyone.
Steve you're always awesome! I should have specified better. See you on the other one :)

Hey guys. Here is my submission. I posted about this razor a few years back and had no success in identifying it.
I know the picture doesn't do the razor justice but the lack of the tail leads me to be believe it is indeed French. There are no maker marks or any writing at all on the razor. There is however a small crescent look mark on the shoulder. I'm not sure if the scales are original but they are made of wood.
Thanks for any help guys and happy shaving!!!!
I know this isn't a response to the existing thread, but I'm trying to find out if someone MIGHT know who's makers mark is a crown over PM? I can't find it anywhere and am hoping one of our Gurus might know? Thanks All!!!
Got any pics?
Yeah but I'm not sure how to do it 😕
After you hit Reply at the bottom, hit the little square box above, 3rd from the right or click "Go Advanced" below & when you scroll lower, you will see "Manage Attachments" & you should be able to figure it out from there.
I figured it out 😃 AND have a couple more just for fun! Hope you can figure it out, I'm at my witts end here😕Attachment 227043Attachment 227044Attachment 227045Attachment 227046Attachment 227047Attachment 227048Attachment 227049Attachment 227050
The no tailed on bottom is the original one I was requesting info on, I just thought maybe y'all would like a challenge 😀! Hope y'all like um as much as me! The last one is #22!
That one on the bottom with the crown over the PM I could not find in my old Gales & Martin Directory. I have seen the one in the top second row before though & I need to keep looking. Perhaps Martin or ScienceGuy will chime in or even Zak aka Voidmonster. I'll keep looking though & it is late right now so I'll continue later on. That last one has to be pre 1800. Very nice score wherever you got 'em!
Thanks 😊 I and my brother have been trying to get our hands on these old makers marks but we've almost decided that we're going to have to go to the hall of curlers in order to do it!
HAHAHA!! 😒CUTLERS
Ahah.........your computer must have over corrected itself like mine does!
