I've had this razor for some time now and it's a very good shaver. I have been looking for history or maker information on it but have not found anything on it. On the blade it has "Superior Quality" "La Porte Germany" "hollow ground" the blade is 6/8" width. On the tang it has a number (59) and either IA. or LA Porte Solingen on it. Here is a pic of the razor and any info or history would be appreciated, thanks.

Forgot to add on the reverse of the tang it has "CLAUSS" on it.

Just a shot in the dark but the 1a refers to the type of steel used, silver steel I think. Clauss was an American company that made razors so another guess would be they also imported razors too at one time.

I apologize but I made a mistake on the back of the tang, it has "IA. Clase " and "Solingen". I looked at it again and this is correct.
No sweat, Forget about what I said about Clauss then but I'll stay with what 1A means. Have you tried looking here Razor makers for a maker or trademark that matches up?

I'm guessing Ia means 1st class. Just an advertising thing.
I'm also guessing it a generic Solingen razor.
Generic? Not
The term generic isn't synonymous with junk, so don't take it the wrong way. One of my best shavers is a lesser known manufacturer. There are probably hundreds of razor manufacturers that produced quality razors, but are relatively unheard of.Quote:

Thanks. I was trying to make out what was inside the circle. I searched through a list of Solingen maker's marks looking for gate, fence, door, etc, but with no luck. La Porte translates as "the door" in French which adds to the puzzle. There are others here on the forum that have much better reference material that may stop by and help. My best guess is that your razor was made to order for a retailer for resale. The good news is that it is from Solingen which ensures that it was made to higher standards and should give you excellent service. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Can't help you, with info. but that's a nice razor! I really like three pin razors and 6/8 and stainless, yellow scales, with inlays...
