    Default Frustrated

Looking for some help. I have been trying to get my razor shave ready with no luck. I have a Solingen razor purchased from The Art of Shaving which was supposed to be shave ready but it wasn't. I have been sharpening the razor on a 8000 water stone then a 12,000 water stone then stropping but it never seems to get sharp enough for a comfortable shave.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you

    rmisale,
The Art of Shaving carries two brands of straights: Thiers-Issard and Dovo. In my experience, the Dovos are not shave ready. The Thiers-Issards have a little more shave ready edge, but I still would have them honed. I don't know what your honing experience is. If I may suggest, send your razor to a hone master and start afresh. This way you can also compare a professionally honed edge against yours to get a baseline.

You can go to the Classifieds here on SRP under Member Services to find someone who can hone up that blade for you.

rmisale -- I'd be pleased to give your razor a complimentary honing, send me a PM if you're interested.

Hi rmisale- Hope you've gotten some useful information out of the responses. If you get a shot, swing on by the honing threads and also read the library which is linked at the top of this page. Lots of good info there. I'm not a pro honer but enjoy learning on some stones I have. From what I know, it would take ages to get sharp off that 8k (I'm not that patient ) and that 12k is more for a finish on your blade. If you have the opportunity, purchase another razor that you can compare to your pro-honed one to. I'm a long way off from being a honer like the guys around here but I'm having a heck of a lot of fun chasing them.
