So I bought a starter kit from Straight Razors | Straight Razor | StraightRazors.com. Has anyone had any experience with this website?
This is my first blade so I basically went with the cheapest set up I could find. Here it is: Buffalo Horn Straight Razor and Practice Razor - StraightRazors.com.
Does the blade look decent? Anyone know about the quality of their honing?

Had to look through old email of frustration to make sure it was not the same company. Not totally honest.
I just checked out vintagestraightrazor.com and the website is set up exactly the same. I think this is the same company.
What was so bad about them?
I did find it odd they don't have a phone number to actually speak with an employee.
Both sites are the same "company". You get what you pay for…check out the Razors to avoid in the Library.
My children wanted to purchase a Damascus razor and was sucked into spending their hard earned dollars on a POS that was very poorly made. The long adventure of getting things set right was frustrating to say the least. I'd say that he took advantage of the children, but I bet he would take advantage of anyone that contacted him for "advice". Ultimately, I was sent a "renovated" blade that was so pocked and buffed is was crazy. This one did shave though. Very over priced when all was said and done. I felt luck to have gotten anything as this was a gift and the kids were not involved in the later transactions.

I hope your luck is in and let us know how you make out with the kit. I don't know how they can stay in business selling the complete kit for what the razor is "supposedly" worth. They must be losing their shirts on that deal. Just call me skeptical.

Yea the website is set up so well that I didn't even question it. Then I started to notice that it seemed sketchy so I posted this thread. Oh well whatever razor I got was just going to be something to learn on anyway.

What you are going to do is be very disappointed as that razor isn't,,, it is what we call an RSO or Razor Shaped Object
That razor and many others like them do not have the Geometry, Hardness, or Tempering or a combination of those attributes to actual take and hold a shaving edge..
So now we all look like Razor snobs but we really are not, we have SRP here to help newbs and get them started on the right track..We actually hate giving new guys that type of bad news...
As to the other stuff I have no idea whether it will work or not, I only tend get the razors sent in to test :shrug:

I had a co worker interested in using a straight so I asked him into my home, I showed him how to strop, make lather and guided him with just shaving the sideburn area.
He really liked it! I told him that I’d help him find a nice vintage beginners razor and strop and he said OK!!
Well my friend who usually has some didn’t and I wasn’t seeing thing at the classifieds but I was still looking.
About a week later while I was in the check out he came up and proudly showed me his ‘prize’ YUP!! Paki ‘Razor’!! I told him that factory edges weren’t that great and that I’d hone it for him! He agreed to let me hone it.
Well after about an hour plus I knew that it wasn’t a razor, just something that looked like one! I called him and told him that I had his razor done and to come over and pick it up.
When he arrived I handed him the first straight razor I’d bought (from HSNB) a nice Red Point with a fresh hone and test shave on it and he said ‘That’s not my razor’ I told no it wasn’t because what he’d bought was just a fancy letter opener! What I’d given him was a real straight razor.
He’s since left and I’d helped him buy two more razors and I hope he’s enjoying them as I’d love to have that Red Point back as it’s a great shaver!
We all learn from our mistakes! Take in stride! Hell, as I said, you will at least have a fancy letter opener! :shrug:
PM me and I'll see if my friend has any nice beginner razors!! They are usually very reasonably priced and he does a very nice job of honing!! :tu
I will try but it looks like they are scam artists as per their all sales are final policy. It appears I have been burned here. I am sorry that I did not find this forum last week. Thanks guys. I will let you know if it actually shaves at all as that is probably all I am qualified to determine.

Thanks gugi. I just contacted my credit card company and they are in the process of disputing the charge. I owe you one! Will report back when I have some resolution.
Big thanks to gugi and everyone else who helped me out. My people are on it and the company has decided to let me return the merchandise.
I had a friend who ordered from the Vintage Razor website. I told him a different site but he must of misunderstood me. He let me know really quickly so his order was cancelled and set right without a problem.
Now, this site sales DOVO and TI razors, two legit razor companies, why are they still selling the crap? Though the etching on them seems sort of cheesy.
One reason could be to create sense of legitimacy for the subpar razors by having proper razors right next to them branded exactly the same. You will notice that there are only a couple of TI in stock, and the prices of the Col Conk Dovos are many times what they are at every other retailer; again a simple marketing technique to list at enormous price and after discounting it with a big discount arrive at a still very big price but in the process capitalize on the customers who fall for the big discount without realizing it's purely artificial.Quote:

One of the 'faults' of internet sites that sell items is that there really isn't any kind of protection for the buyer! You can falsify as many 'likes' as you please but if someone doesn't 'like' your product and complains, there's no 'law' that says that you have to post it!!!:banghead:Quote:

It is not going to be me - I've observed the false marketing for years, every time something gets big attention it's the same story "we're not perfect, we are doing our best to fix stuff", that one customer is taken care of, yet the same misleading but highly profitable practices continue with the tens of thousands of other customers.
Given their history I expect that you will soon see plenty of reviews virtually all of them very positive (one clue as to why is in their facebook 'likes'). The reviews that matter to me, though, are from people with experience and without conflict of interest who I trust - I'm going to wait for those.
Thought I would post here instead of starting a new thread. I got a straight razor set from straightrazor.com for Christmas from my parents. Here's the beginning of what happened: http://straightrazorpalace.com/razor...mas-flaws.html
I sent the razor back, and tracking showed it arrived. A few days later, I emailed asking for confirmation of the arrival. A week after that, I emailed again asking if the razor had arrived and when I could get a refund. They emailed back and said they sent out a replacement. I had already heard the site might be shady, so I was a little disappointed. I decided to give it a chance. After waiting over a MONTH, I finally emailed again asking what was going on. They said they sent an email, but they were having issues and it may not have sent...riiiight, doesn't sound suspicious at all. Later that day, I got an email saying I could "upgrade" to one of their Grim Blades, or get a refund. REFUND PLEASE! The only upside to all this is that they gave a full refund, I got to keep the rest of the kit (soap/case/strop/brush).
Long story short, I would avoid these sites like the plague. They definitely do not seem legitimate. I suppose there's a small chance I had a bad experience....but I doubt I'm the only one.
