    Default Refinement a razor....

My seventeen year old wanted to learn to shave with a straight. I taught him the basics, stropping, face prep, lather....

Long story short, he has progressed very well in a couple months.

I want to get him his first new razor so here is where SRP comes in.
I'm looking for a great shave at a good price ( like that's never been said before). I don't want to get too pricey, but I don't want scrap metal. I own three old razors ( one handed down and two antique store finds ) but I would love for him to start out early with his own brand new blade.

I know this is all opinion that I'll be getting but your input is wanted and appreciated. So here's your chance guys to brag on your razors and post pics if you like.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Stupid auto-correct. The title should read Recomend a razor

Check the classifieds here. You can pick up high dollar customs or a regular working mans blade for a fair price.

I'd go vintage instead of new. They shave better and cost about the same, if not less. If you're dead set on new, I'd order from Revisor. Their selection is huge, just remember to subtract 19% after converting the prices into USD.

Lots of good choices at SRP and they have first rate service! I've bought 2 razors there. A Dovo Special (imitation tortoise shell) and a Boker Edelweiss. I couldn't be happier with the blades. I also have a few vintage razors and enjoy those as well. The razor rotation gives me a different experience each time I shave, no matter if I'm using a newer or older razor. My advice is spend as much as comfortable at SRP or the classifieds here and don't look back. You have something special you're sharing with your boy.

I think the best value new razor would be a Dovo best quality.

Dovo's are okay, I have one in 6/8, but I find my Revisor to be a little nicer, especially for the money. Revisor not only has a larger selection, by far, but I feel like you get more bang for your buck. I also find they shave just a tad smoother than Dovos. I'm sure some will disagree and say that they are about the same, but I know a good amount of people agree.

Now, my vintage Crown and Sword out shaves both my Dovo and my Revisor and is in the same price range...and that's fully restored with scales of my choosing. Perhaps consider Val http://straightrazorpalace.com/gener...s-service.html, he has a bunch of razors on the go and you can usually pick your scales, depending on which razor you pick. I can tell you that my Crown and Sword cost me under $200 and less than my Revisor. Check out his instagram and have a chat with him

You are absolutely right. I've been so caught up in wanting this to be a surprise gift, that I have missed the obvious.
I think the choice should be his. This is a golden opportunity to share the experience of his first razor being something that he will enjoy for years to come. Not one that I think he would like, but one that I know he will love because he picked it himself.
All he really needs from me is a little guidance to make sure he doesn't pick that piece of scrap metal. Oh and the $$ of course.

I knew this would be a good place to start.

    Thanks everyone
