How many of you also use a safety razor?

For those of you who started out with straights, how many have safety razors too?
Are there any big differences beyond maintenance and skill required to shave?

I think once you have the learning curve down, you can get a DFS from both. I prefer straights, but i have a few DE and SE razors.

I used a DE most of my life and still do occasionally at home just for a change of pace and definitely when I travel. Both require skill to use properly with the DE needing less maintenance. Once you get decent with both you may find that a straight shave lasts a bit longer and causes less irritation.

I have a DE, a Vintage Gillette 1964 model Fat Boy that I got off evil bay. I haven't used it much since getting back into straights this past fall. I will keep it for trips though. I enjoy both, both give me DFS, but the straight is my weapon of choice. I also have a few single edges, and a Rolls Razor, none of which I have used, but will once I get them cleaned up.

I have used a straight for the last two years but plan on getting a DE soon. I travel internationally often and am always concerned about my straights getting confiscated, so I'm going to pick up a DE soon. So far I haven't had any issues in traveling with my straights, but I just don't want to gamble any more .

When I started straight shaving I used a DE when I was short on time as it was much faster and gave me decent results. But now to be honest it isn't all that much quicker than the straight for me, and I just enjoy using a straight more. That having been said, I'll still use a DE from time to time just for a change. And as others have said, they can be a nice option for travel.

I was using SEs for a year or two before trying the DE (Merkur slant-bar). There was a whole new learning curve. At this point, the DE gives me a faster shave but with some more irritation and risk of nicks, and the SE takes longer but is smoother and more nick-free.

This says more about me and where I am at with both types of shaving, than anything about SEs and DEs themselves.

I still use my DE's (1 new and 2 vintage) a few days a week for convenience, a marginally quicker shave, and it still has the vintage quality that intrigued me when I started wet shaving.

I used a straight for a year before I won a lot of brushes that had 2 DE's in the pile. I have used them 2 maybe 3 times. I bought 3 more just to collect and that's probably about all they will ever do. The only thing I can say is that they did cut the hair on my chin faster but I am getting that down with the straight now.

DE is the way to go for Pvt. Parts and other quickie shaves.
