Hoping to not hi-jack the thread here but just a question on this topic. I bought a Dovo razor 2 months ago (my first) and I've only a hanging strop. I planned to just send the blade out when it became dull. After reading this I'm wondering what's the best "beginner" method to keeping a blade sharp (or at least prolonging the hone). Paste? Beginner stone? I'm looking for a fairly cheap option to begin with for now until I learn the ropes. Then I'll spend the $$ on good stones once I get the method down.
Thanks!
Get Chromium Oxide green crayon and put it on the back of your webbing on your strop ! Do 10 laps, wipe off and then regular strop !
After that stops working - Naniwa 12,000 super stone !
Really nice razor ! BBS ! Attachment 156131
God, that Bismarck is a handsome blade. It has so much gold and that angled heal gives it an additional touch of elegance.
Yeesh, now I want one of those too.:banghead:
Life is short - JUST DO IT ! ;-)
Although I'm a honing newbie myself, I ended up getting a Norton 4/8 in a deal with some razors, then picked up, like you did, a Naniwa 12k. I'm now just waiting, 2 weeks later, for a Naniwa Flattening Stone to lap the 12k...the Norton was lapped already for me, but I have read it's a good idea to frequently lap the stones.
How are you going to lap the 12k out of curiosity?
I am VERY new at this but in my short life of straight shaving opinion, it's a great shaver also !
