Sweet razors, Stretch! I'd love to lay one of them on my hones... taped of course. ;P
There "shave ready" ! Although I did cromox my Ralf Aust 5/8" that was "shave ready" and it definitely became a better shaver !
Awesome. Sounds like you'll be needing to pick up a refreshing stone in your near future... like a noob friendly Naniwa 12K japenese water stone. That was how my progression(ahem, disorder) started...
Not that you'll need it right away, with proper stropping and occasional CrOx passes on a felt and/or leather. Just sayin', prepare yourself. ;)
I already got it !
Attachment 155970Should be good for a while !
Bought a 100% felt for my SRD Premium I and .25 diamond spray and on my Red Latigo webbing I have the cromox !
The disorders stike hard and fast.
Next you'll be telling yourself that you really need to learn how to hone up a razor from the very bottom level(setting the bevel) to shave ready. And that "my precious" isn't the razor I want to be practicing on... over to ebay, antique stores, and classifieds we go. In the meantime, checking all shipping notifications and tracking, we see out for delivery the bevel setting 1K stone, 4K, 8K, slurry stone(or some variation of this) waiting at home.
:gl:
Hard and fast. Hard and fast, my friend. And, that was just two disorders I covered.
Regards,
Simon
WOHOO ! ON MY WAY BROTHER ! ;-)
Should I just get the Norton 4000/8000 or stick with Naniwa 5000 and separate 8000 ?
Dude you are on fire! Nice haul!!
I would go Naniwa...
Thank you ! Thank you !
I got the Naniwa 3K/8K combo. A King 1K bevel setter.
I grid lap my stones with 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper and a marble slate. Buying a DMT 325 for lapping is probably a better idea, but this works just fine for me.
Did you lap the 12K yet?
If you didn't discover it yet, here's a list of razors to avoid:
Brands of Straight Razors to avoid - Straight Razor Place Library
I did, I did 10 laps on it (Naniwa 12000) with my GD ! Got a great shave from it this morning !
I know GD's are taboo on here but I got a good shave this morning !
I follow the Lynn Abrams' method, but a little loosely. I'll go from the 12K to the CrOx felt, CrOx leather and then the strop is on!...
I recently saw another newer vid of Lynn's where he mentioned the CrOx sweet spot in his experience was 4-7 laps. I did just that and either he is spot on(and we know he is) and I am becoming a better honer or both!!! best shaver yet!
I'm really excited to hear your enthusiasm. I can say that from just before I started until now, I could never have guessed at that time that I would be into doing what I am now, nor to the degree of my enjoyment.
I did the same exact thing !
I'm sure I'll be honing and setting bevels but for right now I'm happy just keeping what I have with a nice sharp shaving edge ! ;-)
Really really nice starting setup you have there stretch! Looking back I wish I had the foresight to start off with not only the razor and strop, but the crox and a 12k naniwa. As for the next step, the mid-grit combo stones are the logical choice, and the naniwa 3/8 as Siguy said is an excellent one to go with. Happy shaving!
Dude, you are hopelessly lost to the dark side now!
Fantastic start! Awesome looking razors!
Congrats,
JC
Hoping to not hi-jack the thread here but just a question on this topic. I bought a Dovo razor 2 months ago (my first) and I've only a hanging strop. I planned to just send the blade out when it became dull. After reading this I'm wondering what's the best "beginner" method to keeping a blade sharp (or at least prolonging the hone). Paste? Beginner stone? I'm looking for a fairly cheap option to begin with for now until I learn the ropes. Then I'll spend the $$ on good stones once I get the method down.
Thanks!
Get Chromium Oxide green crayon and put it on the back of your webbing on your strop ! Do 10 laps, wipe off and then regular strop !
After that stops working - Naniwa 12,000 super stone !
Really nice razor ! BBS ! Attachment 156131
God, that Bismarck is a handsome blade. It has so much gold and that angled heal gives it an additional touch of elegance.
Yeesh, now I want one of those too.:banghead:
Life is short - JUST DO IT ! ;-)
Although I'm a honing newbie myself, I ended up getting a Norton 4/8 in a deal with some razors, then picked up, like you did, a Naniwa 12k. I'm now just waiting, 2 weeks later, for a Naniwa Flattening Stone to lap the 12k...the Norton was lapped already for me, but I have read it's a good idea to frequently lap the stones.
How are you going to lap the 12k out of curiosity?
I am VERY new at this but in my short life of straight shaving opinion, it's a great shaver also !
Lap the 12k ? I thought the Naniwa super stones were spray and go ! Very simple - NO ?
You still need to flatten it. This is what lapping is. It's rubbing something on the stone that is flat so the face of the stone is flat.
People have different methods of doing this.
Diamond plates (dtm)
Nagura stones
Lapping plates
Granite floor tile/worktop
I'm an odd bod I use an optical glass block.
The new stone you have will not be flat until you flatten it. With a 12K that's not going to cause a massive amount of problems unless it's starting to dish, But if the stone were a courser grit like a 1K then it could give you problems bevel setting.
Which dmt should I get ?
Ordered it and it's on its way ! Thank you ! I watched Lynn's video, pretty easy and straight forward !
Yeah, I have the same stones as Phrank but with the DMT 325 (course) and it works great. I'd look into getting one of these to use with the DMT:
Steelex D1091 Sharpening Stone Holder - Amazon.com
They are slippery and can be hard to hold (I find).
Ordered that along with it - thank you ! ;-)
I'm pretty sure all of the synthetic stones need lapping. Here's how I did it, I think it's called "grid lapping":
Hone Lapping 101 - Straight Razor Place Library
Now, I do lap my stones after every session with a razor(just to get the dirty look off really). In the honing section of the library are some great vids on that sort of stuff:

Now, do you know if your razor's bevel was set with tape on the spine or not? The general rule I follow is if the bevel was set with tape, I use tape in every stone progression. If I'm unsure?? Argh! Another opportunity for me to work on my honing. Back to bevel setting it goes. Soooo... every blade I get from ebay or antique store or whatever, gets the treatment.
That's the thing... To me its a nagging question that lead me to get the rest of the stones. It has made all the difference. I've turned some good antique shavers into silky smooth dream shavers. Once I did that for one razor, I was ruined. I knew I could do better on all the other razors(minus "my precious" which remains the holy grail for HHT and TPT tests to compare my work to).
Ruined, I tell you! I try to take a relaxed, don't hone them all at once approach. If not, I'd be waaaaay beyond budget with razors arriving every week.
Stretch, you are certainly starting yourself off right.
THANKS ;-)
