Beautiful treat to receive in the mail. Let us know when you give the razor a try.
Looks sweet. Love the packaging too.
Oh man yer gonna love it :)
I must confess a small degree of envy, sir. :chapeau
What is the wrap made of?
Palm rattan perhaps?
I have a couple of the tamahagane Iwasakis, and I think I'm keeping the original rattan wrapping. But you could look at Jenes razors for some ideas for alternate wraps. He's done some amazing work with his kamisoris.
Found them thanks.
I just hope mine eventually changes color to be like all the others I've seen pictured cause so far it's white pretty much.
How does the wrapping fate with water or moisture underneath? I think that's the main reason people take them off
Nice!
No earlier then 2 hours ago, I picked mine up from the post office. I got the Iwasaki 50mm without the wrapping.
I'm sure this is going to be a fun blade to use!
Cheers.
I copied one of Charlie's ideas from way back on a couple of my other Kamisori, he used a wire wrap and sealed it with a thinned coating of Epoxy on a few of his customs..
My Iwasaki still has the Rattan wrap and I am extra careful about drying it after use
I went with plasti-dip to bulk out the handle of an off-off-off-brand kamisori (a Takami, avoid these like the plague) and the results were mixed. Yes, the handle has plenty of bulk and is not slippery. But after a year, the durability of the plasti-dip alone is questionable. So it's a good route if you want bulk and waterproofing but are also planning to do an outer wrap with something like a decorative cord.
Have fun for the both of us then... I don't plan on using it for quite some time. I got it new, but as far as I know, it's not shave ready and I want to do that myself rather than sending it out. Unfortunately, due to major lack of time these past 6 months, I'm still at the "learn to set a bevel" stage of honing (so far all I've done is turn a half-hollow into a quarter-hollow, I might have a near-wedge when I'm done with it... :p ). I bought the razor now because it was in stock and had a 10% off coupon as well as really cheap shipping.
Cheers.
Jeness razors? Jenes Custom Razors
Tamahagane Iwasakis? Only rarely available. I grabbed mine when Takeshi had them in stock, and there's no telling when or if any more will be made. Although Iwasaki has allegedly transitioned his operation exclusively to razors, there just isn't a lot of tamahagane drifting around.
That's what Takeshi told me. That they're honed by the maker. I think mine will need some good stropping that's all.
Like you Pi3 I went for mine now although it's been a hectic month with plenty of acquisitions because they said it was the last one etc.
Have a look here
A Tamahagane Kamisori is definitely out of my price range...
Really nice razor!!
Watch out for the spike!!
Have fun
Ah, yes. I didn't pay anything like those prices, but it shouldn't be hard to see why one of mine is a user and the other is locked safely in a box, in pristine NOS condition, far from here.
I understand the Swedish steel ones are absolutely terrific, as well as not being so hazardous to the bank balance. It's possible one could find my way into my kamisori box at some point.
Actually, there's no spike on mine. The toe has clearly been muted to 45 degrees by a good 1/16. The toe on ffarouki's picture also looks muted the same way. I had a look at some pictures on the web earlier today as I was wondering if it was broken or voluntarily muted and all pictures showed the same 45 degree toe... Maybe they changed it in some newer batches?
Thanks!
Ok now I get what you guys are referring to. I used to catch myself on the 'spike' of the Bergischer Lowe once in a while. But yes, this seems a little 'muted' if you were to say so to me as well. Maybe as the Kami(s) are becoming popular with us Westerners (I am a Mid-Easterner actually) they're making them friendlier?
