Middleton John, jun. merchant, 4 Union st
from 1837 directory. john middleton also made bowie knives around the same period if im not mistaken. not sure what the "jun. merchant" means????
The blade was made by William Middleton, the son of also W. Middleton, who was listed after 1825, as a merchant, factor, and table knife manufacturer in George Street.
By 1937, William joined the father's business. William was a merchant in Union Street, with a residence in Bloomhall Place. By 1839, father and son had formed Middleton, Newton & Middleton, which had a New York office in Maiden Lane. On 14 August 1841 William Middleton Sen. died at Stand House, aged 51. In the following year, the partnership was dissolved and, most likely, the previous name was returned - Middleton.

One of these days I will crack your sources
when you do let me know! im in awe, iv had this blade quite awhile, had tried to find info several times before, just getting around to fixing her up and thought id see what others could dig up. I wish I had sooner.
Manah- my first inkling was 1850-s ish, you wouldn't have any other info that might suggest how long middleton jr might have continued on after papas death? or a better insightful eye to the details and styling that im probably misjudging?
Can't say for sure.Quote:

But in 1895 William Middleton & Co. had office/store in London on 4 Edmond's Place, Shepherdess Walk. And this information is enough, because your blade was made before 1891.
So, the blade was made after 1841 and before 1891.
My opinion, the blade was made at 1850s, a bit plus or minus.
thank you again, that confirmed my first impression. :D having documentation to support an impression is FAR better than assumptions.
