Look like W. H. Oates was from Manchester at 69 Thomas st, established in 1848, found reference to him at this location up to 1930 or so. Listed as a cutler, the few razor ive came across looked fine to me, as to yours its all about the condition.

Never heard of them.
I hear he had a penchant for ladies of a certain persusion and never went to sunday meeting. Might just be idle gossip, though...
He was also into ........ SEWING, QUILTING, and KNITTING?????
Oh Dear.

AWESOME!! Since you have thrown down the gauntlet, I ACCEPT!!
I believe it customary that I choose weapons.
I choose, HOT AIR BALLOONS AND WATER PISTOLS at 2 thousand yards at a location to be mutually agreed upon, at 1400hrs on the 5th Saturday of Feb, Year of Our Lord 2015.
HARRUMPH!!

This is a nominee for "de-railed thread of the year, 2014"
I was asking a sincere question, just wanting to learn something and "This" is what I get? How "DARE" you people disrupt my thread in such a rude manner!!! It's 'my' thread and you didn't even invite 'me'? Just for that, I'm gonna sight in my long range weapon for thousand yard shots. "YOU'LL GET YOURS, YOU'LL SEE... ALL OF YOU!"

I'll have to tweak my gun sights tomorrow. The Mrs. insists that I fix supper and do the laundry, first. "Dagnabbit!"
Good that will give me time to leave a false trail. Let's see...who should I lead him to for that 1000 yard shot?:rofl2:
On another tangent.
I was just thinking, has there ever been a thread that says any vintage razor or maker was of poor quality. :hmmm:
Don't forget, Swedish ,Japanese , French , & Spanish. All good too. :)
Don't take it so hard Judd,,, the guys here are just playing around a little.
I'll take the responsibility for starting the spiral with my first post, #2,,,
It was the way you asked the question that provoked my silly response.
Had you asked if W.H. Oates was a quality brand of straight razor or does anyone else own one & can they comment on it. The replys , including mine, would have been different.
I apologize if I did not take your question seriously,,,,,,,
Don't apologise. This thread was actually quite helpful. It made me laugh after the auction bids exceeded my budget and I had to let it go. I also learned something about W.H. OATES...
... "uht-oh, I said it again!"
I like the hat idea.

Lime green doesn't work for me.
Can't tell it by the picture but Mom is laughing her butt off.

It's John's fault ( whether it actually is or not, it's always John's fault). Simpler that way, does away with confusion. Just blame it on John. ;)
He can't help himself.
He even takes the credit for killing a TV show.

Got this Oates CLT Razor here yesterday, a very nice Hollow Ground Razor, thin grounded with a nice Pling if its flipped with the Finger. 6/8" wide was it easy and fast to sharpen, the Steel is fine and hard, a very well made Razor in my eyes, the shave today was very good :-)
