Hey guys, so I was searching the web the other night and found this in a website that is some sort of ebay in my country. It's a Filarmonica 13 Doble Temple. It has a bit of rust on it. Are the Filly's that better than the Dovo's (which I own 2)? Just wanted your opinion before hitting the "go" button. Thanks and take care!!!

Don't know about the price but that's a pretty looking razor
William- they don't allow appraisals on the forum, so I can't speak to that. But I will say that I can attest to the smooth shave that Fillys provide. They are a benchmark to a lot of shavers out there for shaving comfort.
Let me save you some waiting: no one is going to comment on the cake of that razor...it's against this site's policy.
What you will hear is that the razor is worth whatever you think it's worth, and that you can try and check the auction site to see what similar razors have sold for.

There are certain "hot" razors out there that command high prices because there is demand for them. Whether you think the asking price is "fair" is up to you to determine. it may be an investment decision or you may just want it. Filly's are very good razors but are they better than a Dovo? I think the vintage Dovo's are the equal of anything out there and they don't go for these prices.

The Filarmonica is a fantastic blade, I'd rate them as one of the best shavers out there, and I'm particular to the old Sheffield razor's. I have 3 Filly's, and they are simply outstanding blades.
Now in my opinion, and my opinion only, comparing a Filarmonica to a Dovo is kinda like comparing a Mercedes to a VW...that's my two cents, hope this helps!
Ive shaved with both. For me I dont see what all the hipe is about with the Filly. Credit the honer not the Razor.

I find Filarmonica's reputation a wee bit overblown. The same with Wade & Butcher. Yes, the Wade & Butcher is a fine razor, but is it worth all the hype and the high price? And yes, the Filarmonica is a fine razor, too, but to echo Thebigspendur, is it any better than the vintage Dovo? I think not. Yet, the Filarmonica's price continues to soar. At one time, I had several Filarmonicas, but they shaved no better than some of my less famous razors — and for the price? Alas, I no longer have a Filarmonica.
I agree with earcutter! It isn't like any of us have just one razor . That looks very nice and if it's in your comfort zone to buy get it. Razor and faces and beards and hones are all very much specific to the person. If u try it and don't like it it's easily resellable
Another good point - I've never tried a vintage Dovo...my two are the newer production models. Have to keep my eye out for an older, vintage Dovo, they are worth giving a try!Quote:

Filarmonicas are great razors, hence the reputation. No more are being made. Tons better than a Dovo, IMO. This example looks excellent. If the deal is right for you, William, I would say unequivocally to just buy the razor.
You should enjoy owning and shaving with it. JMO

Same difference, I suppose. In my eye a 13 with a 7/8 blade like the one the OP is considering is the epitome of the Fillys.
I have a 14, 8/8. Thing is HUGE! Great shaver, BUT would much rather have this one the OP is considering.

Set Bevel and Shaved with my first Filly yesterday. An awesome shaving experience and smooth as glass. I can tell why these razors are held in such hi regards and fetch large sums of money,
Wow I certainly wasn't expecting so many replies, thanks a lot to everyone who contributed. I want to ask you guys another thing, there's some rust spots on the blade as you can see in the photos. I always bought new straight razors and didn't have to deal with that sort of thing. Do you think it's going to be hard to remove those and get the blade shining new. I mean, is it worth the effort or, for a person who hasn't dealt with that sort of issue, it's better to just leave it alone? Thanks again for the consideration.
I didn't see that little bit along the spine being a major event. It would be fairly easy to get rid of. It does however require you to have a little polish to remove it and perhaps some 0000 steel wool. You might want to cover the gold wash when you do that. It does not take much polish or effort to remove the gold wash.
I don't think there has been a request to value the razor, the question was, is a filly better than a Dovo, i don't see an issue with giving a comparison.

Quick answer. I love my fillies. Easy to hone. If you can afford it, get it. I'm sure you will love it but if you don't you could sell it quite easily.
Looks great to me but would clean up fine, just be carefull of the gold wash.
I too enjoy my Fili's and will be looking for another some time in the future.
Take the plunge and enjoy.
