Anyone else hear about Dovo to stop making most if not all of their straights? Don't know if true or not.
Hope not. Hate to see history fade away.
That would be crazy. They can't make them fast enough from what I hear.
No Biggie to me, never used one, would never buy one.
Exactly where did you hear that brucem?
Boker and Ralf Aust are possibly the best production razor manufacturers out there. Dovo? Meh. I wouldn't miss them
If they do stop ( which I doubt) it would most likely be because there is not much profit in new razors today. You have superior shave selling the low end dovos for around $100 which means the mfg has to sell it to him for $60?? plus shipping it?? Even if a tech can make a razor in two hours which I doubt, that does not make a lot of dinero and that's not considering materials. I owned a business all my life and it does not pencil out
I read that they are going to be limiting what they make and not how many the produce.
Maybe they can straighten out the warped spines! Last 5 dovos Ive seen 5 for 5 warped!
I saw it on Badger and Blade and Facebook from The Superior Shave. Looks like they are cutting back what they produce. Having a hard time getting trained people to do the work I guess.

I'm the same really. Never had one, no plans to buy one. But they do seem to offer a solid way into straight shaving for many beginners (not to mention higher-end models for those with deeper pockets, worse RAD, etc.) so in that sense I'd be sorry to see them stop if it is in fact true.
I've owned a good half dozen Dovo"s and honed just as many and they were all great razors. No quality issues for me.
Slightly off topic but I have to comment on how I have heard that excuse about trained workers from so many places. Whatever has happened to the idea of an apprenticeship? Working for the same company for 10 years let alone 40. Companies want a cheap, highly trained, disposable workforce, and whine when they can't get it. They need to make a long term investment that they are not willing to make.
Do we know any of the above to be factual??
I still have a few dovos, vintage and high end current production and I'm quite happy with every one of them.
It seems that this whole misunderstanding started because one of the vendors wanted to speculate in public without relaying the facts he was given - just enough to muddy the waters.
Apparently there is nothing like stop in production, just quitting their experiment over the last few years of making dozens of different models (even in tiny amounts exclusive to one vendor). Now they're streamlining production and switching back to few models only like it used to be.
Sadly some of the best ones are going to disappear, but I guess business is business.
Now that's the only factual information as far as I can tell.
32t, You are spot on about the workforce. As far as Dovo is concerned, I hope they continue to make razors. Maybe I do not yet have an eye for it, but my Dovo is straight or my eyes are crooked:). They do give the opportunity for folks to get started in this craft at a reasonable price for the quality in my opinion. I hate to see any business fail, it is not good for anyone.
I would like to see an announcement from Dovo themselves rather than get too excited about what amounts to a rumor from my POV.
That said, read nothing about them ceasing production all together. They seem to be reducing the number of styles of razors and only doing less technically challenging razor grinds from what i have read.
Bob
I have several Dovos and they shave well and hone well but they don't make larger razors and I have moved on to 7/8 or bigger. I do enjoy a 6/8 but less is not for me so I don't see a dovo in my future
The place where I worked used to have ticketed trades people and apprentices plus helpers on staff. Today and for some time they only hire fully qualified ticketed trades people. No more in house programs. The only time there are apprentices is when the Community College supplies them for work placement for their course. No employer wants to carry the extra staff as before.
Bob
I just brought on an apprentice,Young man, 30ish, no cost to me, he wants to learn how to use lathes, bandsaws, all the stuff in the shop.
He wants to learn woodworking,I will teach him the best I can, makes my heart happy:) Jesus was a carpenter ya know:)
Huh? I don't know what you're talking about.
Err so we've established that Dovo are not going to stop manufacturing razors. Thanks everyone, and have a good day :-)
Can anyone, please post any link to anything related to what Dovo is perportedly going to do? or is this all factoids.
Well, there you have it - you could wait for the next catalog from Dovo, the products currently listed on their website certainly don't match with that vendor's claims (e.g. the stainless renaissance is still listed).
Lol, I just went to the "source". Not that I have ever spent any hard earned money with that vender, they just made it a 100% thing that I never will. I have never bashed anyone one here nor am I but the post was pretty rude.
The OP on the other forum never used the expression "stop making", rather he said "scaling way back" and admitted that he had the information from Facebook - not an entirely trustworthy source in my eyes.
Later, he corrected his original statement on that forum to mean "scaling back the number of razor models".
According to the OP (hence unverified - see below), stainless steel and extra hollow models, Prima Klang, Mammut and square/Spanish point models will be discontinued, and only one of the half-hollow models will remain.

Or as Jon Stewart once put it: "The Internet is just a world passing around notes in a classroom."
Never been particularly attracted to DOVO anyway, but I thought I better clarify this for those of us who are.
I'll be back to my cup of tea then....
