I just use regular mineral oil (unfragranced baby oil). I have a tiny bottle of it next to the sink; after drying a razor with toilet paper or my t-shirt I put a drop of oil in the pivot area. Some guys leave their razors out open for 15 minutes after a shave to make sure they're good and dry, but I've got a cat (nuff said).
For regular use, I just wipe off the soap with cotton balls and alcohol; it also acts as a dessecant. I wipe off the excess alcohol with a kleenex and it's good until its next turn.
For long term storage, I just use mineral oil. It's usually in the same section as alcohol and peroxide, to be used as a laxative. $2-3 per bottle that will last you a lifetime.
mmm, alcohol peroxide and laxitives... sounds like a party lol. thanks ill get some mineral oil. i could use it on my knifes as well.
Door hinges, lock cylinders, hair clippers and cutting boards to name a few more uses.
Mineral oil is wonderful stuff!
I use it to oil the moving parts on certain food service equipment where the moving part would be in close proximity to the food.
I use it because its food grade and it doesn't gum up.
Funny,it never occured to me that I could use it on my pocket knives or straight razors until now.
I've used WD40 as a cleaning aid before. Is there anything wrong with using it on stored razors?
James.
I've heard that it might do funny things to C-steel but I'm not sure how true it is. It's a good water displacer though.
Another issue is that it may not be too good on exfoliated skin. Try to get your hands on an msds. Mineral oil is safe as it's food grade.
Kano Kroil is also a good oil on the pivot, and for underneath the little rubber shank-condoms that pumas and bergischer lowes have. And it's the bomb for cleaning bores; much as I love the smell of hoppes #9 I find kano kroil works much better.
The first couple of times you use Kroil on the pivot you'll be horrified at what comes out. That stuff penetrates everywhere and pulls out crud from places nothing else can get to.
I use it on the bores of my firearms, and even after the other cleaners have done all they can, when I take a patch soaked with kroil and run it down the barrel it always comes out black. It penetrates into the microfractures in the barrel and pulls out the crud that got forced in there under the tremendous pressures. It will slide under the rubber condom on your razor with ease, and no matter how snug your pivot pin is, it will get into the pivot area and pull out whatever it finds.
Unlike wd40 it leaves a thin coating of oil after it evaporates that will protect the steel just fine.
Hey Jimbo,
There are two problems I see with using WD40:
1) Its not food grade which means you could possibly get a skin rash or worse!
I get WD40 and similar products on my hands on a regular basis and while I don't get any rashes I dont like the way my hands feel if it is left on for any length of time.
2) It will gum up and become hard to remove.
I have never heard of Kano Kroil but in the food service equipment repair industry there is a product called aerokroil that I bet is the same stuff! It is fantastic from what I here! never used it myself. Too expensive.
When I was working I ran a computer operated paper shear with a 42 inch cut. We oiled it down every weekend with baby oil, to keep the table from rusting. The reason we used baby oil is that it was a little cheaper than buying mineral oil. However, I use mineral oil on my razor, but the shear did smell better.;)
Cheaper than mineral? I find that hard to believe, unless your suppliers were a bunch of scoundrels. Mineral oil should be 50% cheaper per ml.
