What razor to get for my husband

I would, but this hobby is often more subjective than anything else. I have both a ralf Aust and a Hart , I reach for the Aust far more often. It's not a quality thing, just my preference and why I suggested taking a look at what he has already. That being said, if my wife were to get me a straight I would be happy that she put thought and effort into even if she didn't get me the "perfect" razor.

Like has been said already my vote is for a ralf Aust 7/8, my shape preference is toward square points and shoulder less grinds. I also prefer blonde or honey horn.

I think it's awesome that you are taking this so seriously, and I believe your husband will be tickled pink just by the thought and effort.

When you sneak in tonight, how about you take a couple of pictures? We should be able to ID what he has so you don't double up. Your husband is a lucky man!

No I would not. But then again I am partial to a fine German made razor! But Hart; Bell and Hat; and Jerry Stark are great artisan razors. If you want a real nice American made razor that has a cult following and you can customize it with even chemical etching then look also to a PRC (Portland Razor Company) razor. You can choose the scales and even customize extended jimps along the top; double pin the razor; and so much more. Plus, I believe you would come still under $300 depending on what you do. They are 6/8 quarter grind razors that are beautiful. Go check their web site as an option too.

A few more that speak to me. If he likes wood, you wont go wrong with snakewood. The rustic horn on the other one is equally pretty.

As for the blade, both Aust and TI, or a Revisor will be of great quality. I guess all of these can come in horn, or snakewood. So just look at their website and see what can be customized, or what's readily available.

For a present, a size of 7/8 is a great choice. The perfect balance in my opinion. Anything larger may get a lot more expensive and anything smaller will be, still nice, but kinda standard.

I have not personally used his blades but there has been reviews and all of them favorable and he is a member here, milemarker I believe. Very handsome and affordable semi customs.

Does the snakewood have any benefit, or is it just very classic (an excellent reason to choose it.) Also, this might be a a really silly question- I like the gold on the blades. Will that wear off with time and then look funny?

Possibly but then again maybe not. The only way I can see that swoop style scales would be in stropping but then again, it is not so pronounced I believe it to be a issue.
