Ive just put an order in for a Mastro Livi custom and brought a Tanifuji but the thought of getting a Gold Dollar excites me somewhat. Its genius marketing really. I can just see some men in a board room meeting thinking " we'll make some razors shave ok, the rest shite and let the forums do all the advertising." :rofl2:
Mind you that is pretty much how news/advertising works for most razor makers. You don't see many TV ads for them except possibly Gillette. It is mostly word of mouth in the forums.

I think GD's are simply what they are. No reason for love and no reason for hate. They are a cheap, lower quality razor that will shave. Not the best shave, but not as poor as most of the substandard razors either. They do not hold an edge very long and they often require significant honing or modification to get them working. They have been hyped and promoted heavily by those who sell them which is probably where most of the controversy comes from. There are some environments that make you feel socially accepted if you buy one. There are some environments that will persecute you if you don't like them. They have been around for years and the discussions have really not changed much. Many people have experimented with them and most in my experience have migrated to better quality vintage or new razors. Most that are bought in bulk sell for $2-$5. Most that are sold are usually in the $15-$30 range. They have been a double edge sword to the community too. Some people have gotten into straight razors on the cheap with them and some have run away from straight razor shaving because of their experience with them. The same phenomena exists with cheaper and lower quality strops and mediocre performing soaps. Not to mention brushes and all other wetshaving products and services. YMMV
Have fun.
The R.A.D. serum has completed clinical trials and a H.A.D. version is currently under development.
