Got a duck in my mail wondering if it's still usable also, the hype true or not ?

Hey guys I finally found my first restore project I also found my first dubl duck that am going to send out of course but I was wondering if it's still in good condition to have restored for my first restore am restoring a adoration hand forged I'll post pics of the adoration later I only got pictures of my dubl duck it's a goldedge square tip at first I thought I would never own a duck I really didn't want one they didn't appeal to me and then they started to grow on me still I refused to get one I told myself I rather own a fili I love filis I just don't have the cash to buy one I found a site that gives really good prices on vintage not so used filis then I fell in love with palmera razor yet still expensive and hard to find I think in the near future I'll get both fili and palmera but for now I'll have to be satisfied with a daffy duck lol so what do the pros think good buy I know the hone wear is a little un even and I think it's still in good enough shape to last me a lifetime but you never know am not that experienced yet OK guys break it to me gently is a dud or do I have something that am going to be happy to show offAttachment 228744Attachment 228745Attachment 228746Attachment 228747Attachment 228748

It looks like one neglected duck.

You need to get all the crud off it and see that the metal is in good shape. if it is then you can worry about honing it. The scales appear to have a crack or maybe it's something else.

It may turn out to be a very serviceable razor.

I say give it a chance. You might find that it's a keeper.

Is the blade blued, or is it the photo?

There is some active rust on the heel and stabilizer, and it does have a bit of hone wear on the spine but looks ok, nothing that can’t be fixed.

That type of cracked ice scale is very susceptible to cell rot and a black blade may be an indicator that it is kicking off, though the blade does not appear to have any pitting, which is good. Warped scales, one shorter than the other or a wedge larger than the scales are also indicators of cell rot. Just keep an eye on it and if it starts to pit, you will have to remove the scales. Or are you planning on re-scaleing it?

There are several very good how to pictorial post, on Duck restores in the workshop forum.

You should cut off the active rust with a single edge razor and some steel wool and put the razor on a stone to see if there is any pitting on the edge and bevel before you invest a lot of time in restoration, only to find it won’t take an edge.

I'm with Euclid440 on this one. It is a you will never know until you performa few basic tasks, clear the gunk and set the bevel and more will be revealed. On a lot of blades that is the only place to start, especially full or extra hollow blades. I also agree on his assessing of the scales.

Thanks I did take all the crud off looks to be fine am thinking about re-scaleing it I like the scales to be more of a white then a Yellow but if the original scales are good I'll just fix them if they can be no its not blued just the pic and I don't see a Crack on the scales but I'll look closer I'll take a look at the workshop forum

Hype true or not? The ones I've used are nice shavers, but they don't live up to the hype. I think a lot of their value comes from the name and the scales. Don't get me wrong though, they're very well made razors. When you get it done, let us know what you think about the hype.

I don't know about the hype , I really do think they are just a decent everyday razor with a cool name, there were 100s of thousands made and they are right now priced pretty high for what they are. That said , some of the neatest restores around here have been ducks. And I have owned a couple, one stays locked up cause it bites me every time, I just can't get 4/8 razors to work, but that's my fault. Look up the restores that Pups and Chevhead have done , Very cool. Tc

It is true that there has been some hype. They are good razors. I think we all have our favored brands and choose those above all others. I am thinking that any of the good brands could be someones favorite. Heck I think there are guys that get all hyped over cheap razors. I hope you get a great shave.

What is "unique" about them is three things. They take a very keen edge which lasts a very long time and they are very easy to hone. Also, these qualities are consistent throughout their line.

They were mainly used as professional razors and barbers loved them. As a matter of fact their reputation came about because customers would ask barbers what they were using and in many cases it was a duck.

Like with anything else you have to decide for yourself if the item is worth the asking price.

I have a couple, and they are an extremely hollow ground razor, and for that reason, I fear their paper thin grind as something that will easily bite you.

The Goldedge I have, square point like yours, is easily the nastiest, foulest tempered razor I own, and for that reason - it stays in the cage! :-)

They are good razors, just try your best to clean it up and give it a shot!

It cleaned up pretty good the only thing it has some pitting by the edge but it's minor so you think it will work out for me

I've honed quite a few and everyone of them took a very keen edge and were easy to hone. Great shavers to boot.

Sorry about the late pictures of the Adoration but here they are I took off the black scales that it came with and cleaned it up. I had to have this razor because I read that a famous mob boss of the Italian COSA NOSTRA shaved with this razor. So I figured if he shaved with it then they got to be great shavers, after all those gangsters really did know about the finer things in life. G&F Adorations are great shavers. I've got to disagree with you about the gangster thing though. Murderers and thieves clearly don't appreciate the finer things in life. They wholeheartedly embrace the worst things in life. I'll never understand why that kind of lifestyle is so often romanticized.

I see your point and agree

Your Adoration has a chip in the heel which is already rounded up some into the stabilizer. Better do some reading up on how to fix that. Its going to be a bear to hone if you don't. You got some fixer uppers that will be fine razors though.

10pups how's it going I seen your work boss man got to say outstanding very very cool stuff specially the reaper I can only wish to be able to do that kind of work but time and experience can get me there any advise for a newbie to restore and custom work am even looking into forging

Hey prodigy I understand what your saying and can hear where your coming from (DOT) But this isn't school and it's not an essay

I understood what he was saying. Punctuation would be helpful, but I understood well enough without it. If you truly want to help him you could send him a PM. Instead you're trying to call him out and publicly embarrass him. NOT COOL! Perhaps he's not as educated as you are. Maybe English is his second or third language. He could just be a little lazy in his style of writing. Does that make it okay for you to insult him? Should he be made to feel less welcome on SRP?

Just go slow and be careful.

One of my three best razors is a dubl duck satin wedge. It has clear scales that are in near perfect shape. This razor will always give me a great shave. Note, I did not capitalize dubl duck or satin wedge as that is the way they are on the razor. The other favorites are my German made Red Imp & an old W&B "Hollow Ground" with horn scales.
Anyway I would clean up the duck & see what you have!

I had to own one and went on Ebay and picked up a DD1 and a golden edge that looks brand new. I touched them up on my Escher, Chromium Oxide board and English paddle strop and they shave smoothly. I agree they are easy to hone and maintain. Are they the best, no. I still prefer my Aust's for the money. Are they acceptable for daily shaving, absolutely.
