Thread: Got a duck in my mail wondering if it's still usable also, the hype true or not ?

Hey guys I finally found my first restore project I also found my first dubl duck that am going to send out of course but I was wondering if it's still in good condition to have restored for my first restore am restoring a adoration hand forged I'll post pics of the adoration later I only got pictures of my dubl duck it's a goldedge square tip at first I thought I would never own a duck I really didn't want one they didn't appeal to me and then they started to grow on me still I refused to get one I told myself I rather own a fili I love filis I just don't have the cash to buy one I found a site that gives really good prices on vintage not so used filis then I fell in love with palmera razor yet still expensive and hard to find I think in the near future I'll get both fili and palmera but for now I'll have to be satisfied with a daffy duck lol so what do the pros think good buy I know the hone wear is a little un even and I think it's still in good enough shape to last me a lifetime but you never know am not that experienced yet OK guys break it to me gently is a dud or do I have something that am going to be happy to show off

It looks like one neglected duck.

You need to get all the crud off it and see that the metal is in good shape. if it is then you can worry about honing it. The scales appear to have a crack or maybe it's something else.

It may turn out to be a very serviceable razor.

I say give it a chance. You might find that it's a keeper.

Is the blade blued, or is it the photo?

There is some active rust on the heel and stabilizer, and it does have a bit of hone wear on the spine but looks ok, nothing that can’t be fixed.

That type of cracked ice scale is very susceptible to cell rot and a black blade may be an indicator that it is kicking off, though the blade does not appear to have any pitting, which is good. Warped scales, one shorter than the other or a wedge larger than the scales are also indicators of cell rot. Just keep an eye on it and if it starts to pit, you will have to remove the scales. Or are you planning on re-scaleing it?

You should cut off the active rust with a single edge razor and some steel wool and put the razor on a stone to see if there is any pitting on the edge and bevel before you invest a lot of time in restoration, only to find it won’t take an edge.

I stopped reading your post when I realized it was all one sentence.

I'm with Euclid440 on this one. It is a you will never know until you performa few basic tasks, clear the gunk and set the bevel and more will be revealed. On a lot of blades that is the only place to start, especially full or extra hollow blades. I also agree on his assessing of the scales.

Thanks I did take all the crud off looks to be fine am thinking about re-scaleing it I like the scales to be more of a white then a Yellow but if the original scales are good I'll just fix them if they can be no its not blued just the pic and I don't see a Crack on the scales but I'll look closer I'll take a look at the workshop forum

Hype true or not? The ones I've used are nice shavers, but they don't live up to the hype. I think a lot of their value comes from the name and the scales. Don't get me wrong though, they're very well made razors. When you get it done, let us know what you think about the hype.

I don't know about the hype , I really do think they are just a decent everyday razor with a cool name, there were 100s of thousands made and they are right now priced pretty high for what they are. That said , some of the neatest restores around here have been ducks. And I have owned a couple, one stays locked up cause it bites me every time, I just can't get 4/8 razors to work, but that's my fault. Look up the restores that Pups and Chevhead have done , Very cool. Tc

It is true that there has been some hype. They are good razors. I think we all have our favored brands and choose those above all others. I am thinking that any of the good brands could be someones favorite. Heck I think there are guys that get all hyped over cheap razors. I hope you get a great shave.
