What is this? At first glance I thought it was a bad attempt at spine work but it can't be. How could a razor even wind up with that kind of wear? I don't think it came like that from the factory. :dropjaw:

They are called a "Scalloped Spine" and they are several different styles of them..
This is just one I found in my pics I have quite a few in there but this gives you an idea

I know I have pics on one with just the single scallop somewhere in my albums, if I can find it I will post it for you
Check out this thread on a Joseph Elliott 60 piece set.
Lots of beautiful scalloped spines.

I've heard it called a "tombstone" spine when there is one big scallop from the middle to the end of the blade. I don't know if that's right though. I like the dip above the maker's mark - you don't see that every day. Nice one!
That one is a single scalloped spine? I love the one in Glens picture. They didn't look symmetrical on the Marsh and Shepherd. Being as OCD as I am that would bother me. Lol. Thanks.
Yep, I have a F. Fenney similar to the one Glen showed.
One of my Joseph Elliot razors with a single scallop. This is probably not going to help Hacker7's OCD either... Attachment 240132
Yes.....RA makes one that is more dippity than flowing. Here is my 6/8 with a scalloped spine.

I have always liked scalloped spines. It was the single one I never saw before. After seeing a few I must say they are growing on me. Very different and not all that common. I might just have to get one.
Right on my friend!

Hacker, you could Scallop your own, for fun.
Here is the F. Fenney I mentioned earlier. I hate the scales on it. I think they would be better on another razor maybe but not this one. This is the way I got it but I will find some nice horn scales to put back on it. I just got lucky on that one & no one else bid so I pretty much stole it.

Here's a W&B blade that has a different spine. Unfortunately it has a crack near the heel so it will end up in the Butchered Blade thread in the future. I sure hated it too. These don't come up as often. It was dirty & after I cleaned it up, I noticed the crack. The seller treated me fairly when I told him because after I spotted the crack, as disappointed as I was, I knew it would make a nice shorty.

The Boker 1056 was one of the first razors that I just had to have.
I bought one of those HRC Damascus razors to play around with perhaps I will give it a shot.

Ugly as sin but the steel seems good. We shall see. Off with the scales, get rid of the spike heel and maybe shape the point thinking spanish.
Its done already.
Well OCD and all its now in my possession. It has the Victoria regent on it. It's in pretty nice shape. Can't wait to hone her up and shave.

Very nice! I'm glad you were able to grab that one. It looks like it's in really good shape. How's the tang feel with that unusual shape? Such a cool looking razor there.
Thank you I appreciate it. I have not had a chance to use her yet. Holding it does feel a little awkward. I am sure I'll get use to it. I probably over paid for it but it's one of my favorite manufacturers and I am fond of razors with regent stamps. This one is a keeper.
Any input on honing one of these?
It seems the variation in the spine would affect
