just aquired my great great uncles straight razor.....Can anyone give me any info

Hello everyone,

I just acquired my great great uncle's straight razor. I am looking at trying to shave with a straight razor for the first time. I am going to send it out to be refurbished. I wanted to see if anyone can give me any information on this razor. I have searched the internet till my mind is mush and am not coming up with any information. The original box has "King Hardware Co. Germany". The razor has President on the blade, but I can't find any thing else on the razor at all. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to SRP. Back in those days hardware stores, barber supply companies, had razors made for them with their own name, instead of the maker stamped on the blade, and/or the box. I can't tell you anything about that one except that it was definitely used and honed a bunch. As for learning to shave straight, don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have and check out the shaving videos, and the SRP Library.

Welcome to SRP, sorry I don't have any info on your razor, but it's a family heirloom so that's what's important. It does have significant hone wear, so it may not be the best candidate to be restored, but rather a nice part of a collection. I'm sure some of the other gentleman here can give you more info. Ask any other questions you have, we are here to help.

You have a family heirloom. Whatever you decide to do with it, this is NOT the razor for you to use for learning anything. You should not try to restore it or learn to shave with it. There are too many ways to screw up that would lead to the destruction of your razor. You need to do these mistakes with a razor that is less valuable to you.

Welcome to SRP, I agree with the above statements. Where did your Uncle live/travel? Look for a King Hardware there. Very hard if not possible to figure out many times. Maybe he got it in a trade or bought it from someone down on their luck.

There is a section of the classifieds that is called member services. That is where you will find a person to work on your razor. The is also a section there in which you can often find really great deals on vintage razors. There is a lot of people here to answer your questions as you start to get geared up and start shaving. Utopian is correct about this not being a good learning blade.
