Micarta scales - one of the best, in my opinion

For durability, toughness, solid feel and texture, I think it's hard to beat micarta, although it's not as popular as the natural materials but it's really great stuff. And I, personally, think it's pretty easy on the eye and quite easy on the wallet.

Thank you. This is maroon linen micarta, which is made with layers of linen bonded together with polymer resins. It's extremely tough, waterproof, chemical resistant, UV resistant and about as stable a material as has ever been made. It takes a nice polish and maintains what I consider to be a very nice texture with deep color. All my personal shavers are handled with micarta. It doesn't have the character of the natural materials, but for pure, practical beauty, it's impossible to beat, in my opinion.

Robert, I love it!!! I think it would look great on my Wapienica blade. And maroon too :) Add in my Alma Mater(sp)'s official seal and :hmmm:

Micarta is my favourite knife handle; I'd love to see more of it on razors.

I am one of the big fans of natural (horn, wood, etc.) scales but I am willing to grant Micarta almost equal status: because it looks great, indeed, and is still to a large part natural, imo

One of my Robert Williams razors has micarta scales, and I also have a high opinion of this stuff for razor scales.

Is this the same Micarta that Dovo uses?
I DO have one of those, and those scales are rather sturdy!

I've noticed that most of your Micarta is burgundy/Red. Do you also use black micarta, and does it come in any other colors?

Also, does all Micarta have that layered look when it's cut at an angle?

Good questions, Chris. I don't know what brand or manufacturer's product Dovo uses, but it's the same type, i.e. linen micarta, so the biggest difference could possibly be the brand name. Otherwise... well, linen micarta is linen micarta.

I've got some black but don't like it as much, personally. There are other colors, but red, black and maroon are the most popular. Linen Micarta lends itself well to sculpturing to reveal layers and patterns, which is what creates the overall look of the scalloped micarta. How it's ground determines where the "rings" show up. This is flat ground to minimize that effect for an overall homogenous and polished look, rather than a textured "woodgrain" effect.

I've got a Bark River knife with green linen micarta scales that are absolutely gorgeous - the linen pattern comes through looking like fish scales.

I've been using Micarta for quite some time. It's wonderful stuff.

I have a Hen and Rooster knife which has Micarta Scales in Black and its the most incredible stuff I've ever seen you would swear it was ebony wood. The old bertram factory did incredible work.
