there was a thread on this a couple days ago. The search button is helpful.
The short: made by dovo so generally decent stuff, but takes alot to get the first hone on them. 3 of the hone miesters did a very good review of them.
They make a nice letter opener. For what it's worth, I know one of the honemeisters here won't even work on one.
Spend your money on a honed, shave ready vintage blade from one of our members. You will be far ahead even if you pay twice the price.
Just my two cents,:)
You know, I do not know why there's such a downer on these razors. Yes, the first hone can be a pig because the factory (and these are factory products, hence the price) puts a bevel on them that's about 45 degrees. Horrible but not the end of the world. Given also that the Paladin and Teuton are top grade Swedish carbon steel forged and ground in Solingen Germany (not Solingen China) and I start to smell the aroma of badge snobbery. OK, they're not a top grade Dovo or TI (and I've read plenty of gripes and whines about those too, despite the price!) but I do believe that they provide a good entry level razor for someone who, for whatever reason, doesn't want a vintage model. True, I do not approach honing one of these with any glee but it's nice when they do (eventually) pass the HH test (and they will if you're patient). I think the reason they are difficult to hone (apart from that bevel) is that the steel seems very hard indeed - maybe the Swedes like it that way?:tu
I don't know for sure but I'd imagine there are some truly crappy cheesesteaks being sold in Philly right now...
What? Does not grok O mighty one.
Philly cheesesteaks are great eating. But there are probably some restaurants in Philadelphia that turn out some really bad ones...
Er - OK. I think this an American 'in' joke? Sorry, I'm a Brit - what Philadelphia got to do with anything (honestly I'm in the dark here).
Somebody from Philly help me out here...
And what is a cheesesteak? Sounds odd. Steak with cheese on? or a piece of cheese with steak wrapped round it? Bizarre! Sounds wild. Saw a site called steak&cheese once - don't visit it.....
I read that whole post, it said exactly that they had some quality problems and that it was a difficult fist hone with alot of maintenance, but overall a serviceable razor. so, yeah not really positive but also not too negative.
My point in a nutshell. At least they sacked the Korean makers and now these are genuine Solingen blades. If they would only get that damned factory bevel sorted I bet that all of a sudden they'd be liked a whole lot more. Maybe you could even cut a cheesesteak with them (whatever that is! )
The whole philly cheesesteak thing....
Philly cheesesteak is a sandwhich of thinly cut steak pieces usually mixed with onions and bell peppers that are grilled. The grilled mixture is then placed on a hard roll......hero style....and covered with a cheese of some sort.
The best place to get these are in Philadelphia.
So to the poster who said im sure they sell bad cheesesteaks in philly was saying.....that even though Philadelphia is known for cheese steaks, im sure there are some real stinkers that are made up there.
Then why didn't he just say that? Those sound good by the way - I suppose if anyone does make bad ones they go out of business? In common with any product, I guess.:D
I did say that, I just wasn't translating, LOL.
Regarding the review thread: It's always interesting to see the different ways different people interpret a thread like that. My take was that the reviewers were trying very hard to be polite to the gal that worked for Kamisori. Had it been a guy I'd hope they would have been as polite but I wouldn't guarantee it. Be that as it may my take on the review was that the reviewers didn't care for the blades and would not recommend them to anyone. I have one that I bought. I don't have any financial interest in either Kamisori or any of their competition. Given that I feel that I have a fairly unbiased opinion. I would highly recommend that folks spend their hard earned money on something of value. That would NOT be the kamisori.
