    Default Help Me Pick

Im looking to purchase a 7/8 blade before i decide to have one made for me to see if i like it. I was looking at one of two Razors since they are relatively cheap.

7/8 Henckels Friodur Round Point or a Filarmonic Doble Temple 7/8. That is the question. They both have plastic handles scales which im not fond of....but for the price i guess thats what you get.

You can't go wrong with either. Both are excellent shavers. The Henckels might be a little heavier than the Friodur.

    Good Luck,

He meant the Henckels Friodur will be heavier than the Filarmonica. The reason being, the Friodur is made of stainless stell, whereas the Filly is just a carbon blade. Stainless steel is made from the addition of (among other things) chromium, which is a fairly heavy element. This gives the German a slight weight advantage over the Spaniard.
If you're looking for a larger blade, this might be what you want, as the added weight can provide extra momentum for your shave if you have a very tough beard. However, most people over-rate their beard toughness, and are fine with a 6/8".
I would definitely recommend the INOX blade; it's a little trickier to hone since the steel is harder, but it holds it's edge better. However, the Friodur is not a true NOS (new old stock), its a Heribert Whacker grind of some old blanks. The grind isn't as nice as the older ones, but it should still perform very well.

Also consider the in-between sizes. If a 6/8 really isn't big enough for you, look around for the 13/16 blades. I find the 7/8 is like trying to go dancing with work boots on. Something a little more manueverable is preferable for me. And don't forget the grind! a 1/4 hollow will have a totally different feel than a full hollow - much stiffer and easier to plow through tough beard in my opinion.

Forgive me for not knowing.....but how does a 13/16 compare in size. Ive never seen one...i thought blades were primarily on the ?/8 System......so when you say ?/16 it has me intrigued.

A 13/16 is a little bigger than a 6/8 and a little smaller than a 7/8. So many razors to try!

My "perfect" size razor so far is 11/16. I like the bigger razors for my Saturday and Monday shaves, but by the middle of the week, when I'm shaving every 24 hours, I don't need all that heft. Between 5/8 and 6/8 is plenty. But you're not going to know what works well for you until you try them.

Yeah..i love the look of the bigger blades, but i dont necessarily have a beard that needs to be mowed down. Its more of a cosmetic looks of the blade that im after.

The sizing system is done eighths of an inch, therefore a 6/8 is also a 3/4 being 3/4 of an inch, or I suppose you could say 12/16 thus a 13/16 would be a sixteenth of an inch bigger. Does that make sense?
