Unknown Solingen razor, sword in two hands mark: any ideas?

Yes, I'd maybe put it between the wars. Unusual scale material, some kind of rubber, but not vulcanite, because it softens with heat.

Could the scales be Bakelite?

Probably Gutta Percha, popular in the early 1900’s for razor, knife scales and gun grips. Also, for telephones, and why they were black.

Polishes well, breaks easily, and cannot be glued.

I'd say there are two compelling reasons why it isn't Bakelite: first, it softens with heat, and second, it smells strongly of burnt rubber, as Vulcanite does

If Gutta Percha smells of rubber and softens with heat, I think we have our cuplrit!

Yup, rub venously with your thumb and smell. People used to complain that Dentist offices smelled of burnt rubber, it was and still is the filling use to pack a tooth root for root canals.

If they chip or break, I have never found anything that will glue them. They will shine brightly with any good metal polish.
