Oddly, the Satinedge clear ones usually are infected by the wedge. The black ones will do it but the red ones are really bad. The Case Temperites are about the same.
I have one I am about to de-scale. I will try to get a pic up.

I don't remember seeing this before but if it has been mentioned forgive me.
Has anyone tried putting a PH test strip between the scales and the blade for a warning sign?

You are right in that they work with moisture. would the moisture in the air be enough to activate them? They have to be stored in a sealed container. How long out of their container would they be active and not react?
Just thinking out loud again and not all of my ideas are the solution!

The strips are designed for liquids not stuff in the air unless maybe the humidity is close to 100%.

I have decided to display my celluloid with blade open and subject to frequent air exchanges.
Fortunately, I have been lucky as providing a good environment for some nice examples before any rot set in.
Inspect often and don't let things get out of hand!
