Thanked: 0Sanitizing...?
When buying a used/vintage razor do you bother to sanitize it before using it? I'm not much of a germaphobe, but when it comes to something that most likely has had someone else's blood on it, I don't think I can be too careful. Just wondering what you guys use to sanitize your gear...I'm actually fortunate enough to have access to an autoclave, but I'm afraid it might damage some of my scales...I've also picked up a very nice badger brush at an antique store recently, and would like to know the best way to sanitize it before using...

Well, not sure with the brush but I do know alot of folks use Barbacide for their razors, just dip the blade in there for anout a minute or two and wipe carefully. I am sure others will chime in as well. Oh BTW an autoclave will destroy your scales, dont do it hehe

Thanked: 0yeah I've only run the blades through without scales when I was in the process of changing the scales...I will say something about the autoclave makes polishing them up afterwards a breeze..
however I've attained a couple Wade and Butchers with very nice scales..so I was at a loss as to how to sanitize them..thanks I'll be picking up some barbacide just as soon as I find a source.
Still if anyone has a suggestion about sanitizing the brush? I'm thinking I'm just going to give it a rinse in really hot water, but if anyone thinks there is something better please let me know...
Thanks in advance..

Thanked: 335Pathogens are a worry for me too. I never walk into a crowded room, never touch a door knob without a glove or tissue, never drink from a glass, never shake hands, never... never... never...
Really, I think this easily can get over-worried about. We live with most of the nasties all the time without too much problem and to get rid of them, some soap and water, maybe an alcohol wipe or a dilute bleach wipe, and a thorough drying will take care of just about any thing worth worrying about. We probably should be much more concerned about life affecting issues from playing out in traffic in the company of cell phone users.

Since I don't put a razor into use without first polishing and honing it I don't worry about germs. There aren't many that will remain on the blade after soap and water washing twice with a solvent bath to remove tarnish and rust in between. If the razor is comming to you ready to use I would ask the other guy what steps he took with it. If you find thos inadaquate barberacide or a simple alcohol wash and soap and water wil probably solve any worries.

barbacide is NOT good enough disinfectant for things that may have come in contact with blood, 70-90% alcohol is the safest and cheapest way to deal with the viruses and bacteria related with blood (still not 100% garentie though)
