Travelling with a straight razor?

So I'm headed back to Britian this August for a month, and I was wondering if it's a good idea to bring my razor with me? I'm hesitant to put it in my carry on luggage because if they find it they'll probably confiscate it, but I'm also a little concerned about putting it in my checked luggage for fear of it being tossed around or wrecked. Has anyone else done this before? Should bother with it or should I just pack my old Fusion for the trip?

I'm on vacation right now (TX), and I brought my straight in my checked luggage, tucked in with the rest of my toiletries.

So would you reccomend wrapping it in a t-shirt or something, or just throwing it in with my shaving it? Ooh, I just remembered I have that little leather sheath too......

Put razors in the luggage and no poblem. This is just razors to shave. I flew for a couple of weeks to Europe and took five razors and without problems, nobody even asked.

I have one of those roll-up, multi-pocket, clear plastic toiletry kits. Even though it's a soft case, tucking the razor in between the bottles of shampoo and bodywash is enough to keep it from being damaged. Wrapping it in clothing will also help protect it, but keep in mind that the TSA may want to take a look, and the less they have to disturb, the better.

If you have a box to put it in it should be more than enough. Wrap the razor in tissue and store it in the box along with other stuff. That's what I do with mine when I travel. I recently flew to Italy and nothing happened: the razor flew in the checked luggage with no problems. It was in my rucksack and the only problem I had was, when I was about to board the flight with one other potencialy dangerous item: a Zippo gasoline canister for my Zippo lighter... Stupid me... when I was called I thought that it was some sort of thouble with my razor. But no... when they showed me the X-ray of my backpack I even saw the razor inside: alive and well. No questions asked... Razors, when left alone are no threat to civilian flights. You will never get it passed through airport security in your hand luggage, though... that's quite clear.
If you don't have a box for the razor I would suggest a tooth-brush box or even some bubble-wrap around it. That should keep it safe.
One word of advice though: if you have an expensive razor you should leave it at home and use a DE or disposables. Chances are that nothing happens, but if it does, if your luggage gets lost and flown to Timbuktu or Nepal, you will not loose your treasured razor.

I'm not sure what the regulations are for Britain, but latest TSA regulations indicate that you cannot have a straight razor in a carry-on luggage. If you want a shaving kit, but avoid the fees that now come with checking in luggage, get a safety razor. If you would rather stick with a straight, be willing to pay the fee for checking luggage in.

Currently what I'm diong since I travel so much is have a toiletry bag with all of my grooming gear that's TSA approved. For example, I'm going to get a quart-sized, clear plastic bag and have a couple of 3-oz bottles - mouthwash, facial soap, toner, lotion, facial scrub, and shaving cream. I'm also getting one of those travel brushes that has a cap on them and a DE safety razor, but no extra blades.

Buy a Wapi, or EBay $25 razor as a travel blade. Put it in your checked luggage, and don't sweat it.

Do not travel with your one-of-a-kind hand forged limited edition damascus. You can live without it for two weeks...

I've traveled with mine in my checked luggage many times, never a problem. I put in in the plastic box that my Dovo came in and pack it with my toiletries. I always wrap a rubber-band around it so that the blade stays shut if the NTSB inspector opens the case and dumps it out on the table while inspecting my stuff.
