Thread: Ramapo Co. Str8?

I picked this razor up a while ago with some rust on the blade and broken scales for a few bucks. My 13 year old son and I sanded off the rust, rescaled it with only hand tools and honed it back to life. I know the scales are off, especially the stop pin and plan on making new scales soon now that is is not sticky hot here. I shaved with it for the first time this morning and it shaves really smooth. This was my first shave with such large wedge of 7/8 and I like it alot.

Has anyone know anything about this of brand razor. All I know is what is stamped on the shank which is shown in the attached pics. Sorry about the quality of pics. It's the best I can do with the time and equi[ment I have. All comments are appreciated.

Joel over at Badger & Blade had one of those with extreme toe wear reground by Bill Ellis into a completely new & different looking razor.

Yours looks to be in fairly good shape. I don't know the vintage of these.

Ramapo is in New Jersey; prolly nothing to do with the razor, but that's all I've got.

Ramapo Iron Works - Route 17, base of Terse Mountain, Ramapo - Producer of cut nails, wood screws, cotton cloth, and spring steel in first half or 19th century. Founder, Jeremiah H. Pierson, was influential in building Nyack Turnpike and New York & Erie Railroad across the county. Cotton mill still standing on east side of road.

Doesn't say anything about razors though. Maybe Manah might have an update. I'd be interested as I picked one up for a song and it looks old and it's probably the largest razor I have. about an 8/8 almost wedge. Where yours says 53 this one says 60.

Sorry, but I could find nothing about this company.
Ramapo Co. Warranted is listed in some books, but without any info.

The one by Ellis was apparently shaped like that from the start. That's why the spine had a taper to compensate for the taper in the width of the blade. Not really important or relevant to this very old thread, though.

I remember seeing Joe's Ramapo at the meet. Funny to see people's old work and how it compares to their newer stuff.

I've been doing some more searching. Found this, it's from 'Transactions of the New York State Agricultural Society', Vol. 5 Page 81, dated 1853.

Thanks! This IS an old thread. LOL When Jr and I made these scales all we had to work with was a coping saw, a file, some drill bits, a pin vise and my Tool and Die Maker's mini hammer. Seems like a life time ago. Over the summer I asked Jr if he wanted to rescale this razor again to bring it up to our current standards. He likes it the way it is and wants to remember the first razor we did together. Can't say I disagree. This is a sweet shaver and has me looking for more of them where ever I go.

Another beautiful find and fabulous work. A very sexy shoulderless, I must say. But, I know nothing about the brand/company.

Please extend my compliments to JoeJr as well. Get a little of CarrieM's BRV going and I am sure this baby will love to dance in that lather.

Robert, this was one of Joed's first rescales (2008) so she's danced in the lather a few times He just keeps getting better.
