Removing Gold Wash *rant*

RANT ALERT!!!

So, I got my gorgeous Craftsman ERN razor in the mail today and take it out of the box and voila! Gold wash everywhere. I mean everywhere. The tang, the etching in the blade, even the :censpine!!! *Sigh* And now it all has to go because there is active rust going on and its all over the spine. So the spine is gone, in fact I already removed the worst of the rust. :td Next gold wash to leave will be the blade. :( This thing must have been drop dead sexy when it was new. Its pretty damn gorgeous right now.

And no, you guys don't get pics. I'm mad. I'll post pics when she looks prettier. After all the gold is gone. Probably not worth it to send it out to get re gold washed either.

Sure it is! You will love this razor even more when she is fully restored. Down tools, have a glass of single malt and relax. Things will look a hell of a lot better.

Words of wisdom right here. It might not be as bad as your first impression and you might be better off than you think.

Thanks guys. The razor is fine. In better condition than the pictures actually. Didn't even know it had gold was on the spine. I'm just sad that it has to go. Overall the razor is worth the $50 I paid for it. Hardly any spine wear, beautiful faux tortoiseshell scales. Gold wash, I guess. Just sad to be the one to remove the gold wash.

I don't have a single gold washed razor with 100% of the gold wash still present. It is only a couple of millionths of an inch or so thick so it can't last forever. Who needs it, anyway. With that said, I DO have a couple of big ornate razors with more than 90% of the gold wash intact, and they look fantastic....Sorry for your loss.

Are the scales celluloid? If so, a picture may be worth your time before you do anymore cleaning! Let the experts have a peek.

Faux tortoiseshell, realigned them already. Blades nice and centered now. PLUS! They took the realignment so well, that the water didn't leave any white marks! :tu Big plus. Normally have to MAAS out the darned white marks when I do that.

I am saying that if the tortoise is celluloid you may have cell rot wich would account for the rusting. Now that you have cleaned it up it will be harder to tell for sure, but you'll know if it starts rusting again!
As a precautionary measure, I would advise that you dont store it with your other razors until you know for sure.

I've seen celluloid rot. The rust is only on the spine, where the gold wash is, so the gold wash has to go. The craftsman logo has some rust too, so thats going to go, but thats personal choice. Thanks for your concern though.
