celluloid rot... that sounds scary. I've heard of it and its causing rust but I don't think I've ever seen it.

Anyone have pictures of what celluloid rot looks like?

Here is a razor I bought in a group purchase recently that is eaten up by celluloid rot. I kept it long enough to photograph it and then tossed in the trash. I have almost 200 razors and this is the only case of rot that I have ever come across. The circled areas on the scales, which are a shade of orange, were the main culprits. The surface in these areas were blistered on both scales.



This razor, another Kobar, was in the same box with the one above, but seems to have escaped any damage from being in close proximity to its diseased cousin. Both razors were from seven day sets, but had different scales.

Celluloid rot is to razors what leprosy (whoops, Hansen's Disease, sorry) was to humans in the days before antibiotics. Unclean, Unclean!!! Must be isolated from all other razors due the off gassing of a powerful oxidizing gas. (don't know what it is, but have see how fast it can rust a razor personally-overnight!) Get rid of it or keep it in a Mason jar or something. Thanks for sharing the photo.

Celluloid Rot isn't always fast and total. I've had razors where the scales looked perfectly mint and yet there would be a tiny spot on the razor that was obviously rusting from the rot and over many months it would just get worse and worse. You really have to be on the lookout for the stuff.

It's facinating. I'm amazed at how local the damage is, you can almost pick out the pattern of the scales by looking at the blade. A great shame, but facinating.

Ive got one that Ive been watching die for about a year now, its fascinating watching that stuff eat up scales.It is isolated from all other razors.
