Hey, I saw a razor on ebay that is "Two Crown Sword" also stamped ERN in greek letters (epsilon rho nu, looks like a wierd E, P, N)
Also, the second picture is a "Sword" that looks like the Crown and Sword, without the Crown. Also marked ERN, and visible is the Solingen stamp.

While I cannot speak to the authenticity of the razor I can say that we had a thread here that spoke about the ERN razors. It turned out that 6 companies used those letters, but all had different hallmarks. I guess the most famous of the ERNs is the Snake and Eagle hallmark, which I believe is what prompted the conversation.
Your razor maybe a real ERN from another company.

It is original ERN, there is a stamp without a crown, only a sword.
Singlewedge, do you have a link to that thread? My first blade was an ERN Gong, I'd be interested to see if it's mentioned.
I just picked up a razor with the 1896 logo etched on the blade. Spanish point. Tang has two lines stamped:
Non plus ultra
Made in Germany
Anyone with more info? Manah, do you have a book you're referencing?
I'm debating whether to have it repinned in black horn.

There must have been a warning on the original packages, like "do not accept copies".
And the four spiked crown looked odd to him.
Thats why he thought it was one and sent me a message
to keep me from getting slaughtered by gossip.
The razor is fine to me. Weight, balance, steel, handle material,
all the same as other ERNs of that time..
Non Plus Ultra doesn't appear on the List of ERN brands though.
Yes, Non Plus Ultra - isn't present in the list.
But it is not necessary to forget that in Solingen there were 7! factories ERN, and can and more.

C. Friedrich Ern — 1873
E. Ern and Co. — about 1878
Friedrich Ern and Co — 1888
Gustav Emil Ern — 1903
Walter Ern — about 1922
W.C. Ern and Co. — about 1920
As these all factories marked their production, impossible to know.
Non Plus Ultra was the motto of spain for a while, as a matter of interest. If memory serves me correctly it is latin to the effect of "nothing more" or "nothing further" or something. So I'm guessing this is one of those advertising stamps that implies it is the best. Like: Barber's Best, IXL, etc. I'm guessing it's most accurately translated as "Nothing Better".

Sorry I goofed a little bit. Spain's motto was "Plus Ultra" meaning further or onward or something. Thus, Non Plus Ultra= nothing further/excelling/onward/etc. Also now that I think about it, the history of this is supposedly Hercules or someone (probably not Hercules now that I think about it, he was greek, non plus ultra is latin I think) built pillars at the straight of Gibraltar and they are inscribed with something like Non Plus Ultra (not exactly, its like nil plus ultra or nec plus ultra or something). Cus in their days that was the end of the world. I dunno if the two stories are related.
On the flag of Spanish city Melilla is "Non Plus Ultra".
So it can be connected with Spaniards.=)

Are you sure 1896 is a date and not a model? For example, Dovo T-shell is stamped something like 1816, which could be a date but isn't.

Germans never wrote date of manufacturing on razors, it is model number.
I just inherited this exact razor from my mom. The piece belonged to my great grandfather who immigrated to America from Sweden around the turn of the twentieth century. The markings on the blade and tang exactly match the ones in the picture. Mine has cream colored scales. I can definitely confirm that the markings are not a reproduction since it sat in various keepsake drawers in it's original sheath for around 100 years over three generations. The craftsmanship on this is exceptional because it only needed a light stropping to regain shaving sharpness. Simply amazing. I would like to know more about when this was produced and by whom!
