Nice, tell him to go for both!
I have a Livi, It's a great razor, well balanced and holds an edge. I can't say about the other, because I don't own one.
I'm not overly fond of the goldwash on Wackers. When I grow up, I want to have this one, though: "Old Sheffield" First Edition, 7/8" - Meisterarbeit The Different Scent:.

I have to admire your grandfather's taste.
Here is my suggestion.
Let him buy the Wacker. Tell him that is what the folks at SRP said he should do.
Then you and the other children, grandchildren, etc. Chip in and get him the Livi for Father's day.
Problem solved!!
Awesome idea dude. Any details on the two razor's though? I might need it for future reference :)
Does he have a preference in the grind? The two final choices have different grinds (as I believe the Livi is more hollow than the Wacker), if someone could validate that. That might help make the final choice.
I have a Wacker and several Livi's and personally I think the Livi's are in a whole other class. its like comparing apples to oranges or a Buick to a Mercedes.
Or he could get one of the new Bokers they are ground by wacker
so...... what if I like Buick?
LOL
I was trying to figure out how good Wackers were too
which is the best? (Wacker)
He should also check Robert Williams and Joe Chandlers work out as well.
I've seen and read so many Wacker at the german boards, I'd be more curious about a Livi cause its nowhere near standards IMHO.
I don't know who is grinding the new Revisors, but I love mine.
If Gramps is a fan of big razors how about this?

i believe both razors are new grinds of old blanks. the livi is a whole lot more appealing to me as far as aesthetics go, but i prefer horn to ebony as scale material, but the ebony is really really nice, so i'd be perfectly happy with that too.
other than that i haven't used neither, so i can't comment on function.
I much prefer the look and design of the Wacker, personally
I don't have my Livi new grinds here at work to confirm the grind, but my recollection is they are closer to half hollow than full hollow. Lynn might stop by and make an official pronouncement.
I own the other one (the Wacker), and I love it. Note, I also don't like the gold wash treatment on most Wackers, but this one only has a bit on the face of the blade, none on the spine or tang, and it looks pretty cool when you partially polish it off with Maas...
I think the big deciding point between these two razors might be the grind-- the Wacker is a 1/4 hollow grind, and is very hefty (which I like). What's the grind on the Livi?
Note, I also have a full hollow grind Dovo, and I like the contrast between the 2 razors-- I alternate using them every shave.

I Have tried Livi and it was 1 of the best shaves i did get. i would go with livi by the way Lynn honed it.
It all depends on what you want outta the blade. As far as one being plane or not, its what you want the maker to provide. Im sure if I asked the Maestro for a plain one, he would provide me with one...alternately if I were to ask Chandler for a crazy one im sure he would oblige.
As for Wacker, I do believe he just does the grinds, so not really doing any custome work, but I could be wrong.
Its a matter of how you define better. Do you mean the shave? A $40 Eboy special might beat them all.
In general I think the Wackers are basic factory made blades and he does the final finishing. Livi's are handmade by him from start to finish. That pretty much says it all to me.
I'd hardly call this Joe Chandler razor plain...

As already mentioned here. I think that can not be compared Livi vs. Wacker. They have different classes. Livi is much higher.
ok i stand corrected, i guess chandler has a flare as well!
Alex just said it all. I have a Wacker and LOVE it, BUT...it is NOT a LIVI!!! Different animal all together.
Well, that's a good question and I can't answer it because I have not ventured into the custom razor field yet. As for the best of the best, that may be a different question. To address the best of the best only you and Gramps can make that final call. I can suggest two things that may help yo determine that other than our opinions and pictures on the web.
1) Have Gramps send Lynn a razor to hone. One that he has been using all along. Gramps must have been maintaining his straights well enough to use but by sending one to Lynn he will have an edge to compare to his own.
2) Spring is here and the weather is getting better. SRP meets are popping up all over the place. See if there is one in you area. If not, start a post asking if anyone is interested in having one in your area. Go to the meet with Gramps and see what everyone else has as far as grinds and honing skills you both can try out. You may come across a Livi, Wacker, Chandler or other custom blades that you can see and maybe try out. You may find that the best is dependent more on honing and not who made it. You may even find that a Puma, DD, Shefield or US made blade meets you idea of best more than a custom :gaah: did I say that? In the end only you can label something the best of the best and it will be based on your experience to date so get as much as you can before deciding on a big purchase. Good luck.
That's an easy choice, Chandler!!!!!! :D look for more pictures of his work. are wacker's custom? I thought he just reground other people's blades. definitely not a livi. I can't afford any of them, but for real style? come on guys, livi's, once in a while one looks good, but overall, most of the scales look the same, and they don't look to me to be very often that great. I love chandlers, Bill Ellis work is great too, but personality wise Joe seems more friendly. josh earls stuff is good, I love some of his acid finishes. Butch does some good work too. if your grandpa isn't in a hurry might wait and see what Alex (Philadelph) turns out, he's a real perfectionist. I'm sure his stuff will be awesome.

a 40 buck eboy special beat a Livi.... never!:) Sure, you can probably match a Livi if you're lucky and your eboy special just happens to tick all those boxes, but never beat.
And you'd have to be real lucky, whereas with a Livi there's no luck, only reliability.
Depends on how its honed I suppose.
Actually probably my best shaving razors are a couple of vintage Dovo's I got NOS. I have a bunch of Livi's and I'm really splitting hairs here. However just because the Dovo shaves better by a fraction of a millimeter I would never say the Dovo is a better razor, not for a second. Really when two razors shave so close its pretty much a dead heat.
I paid £1 ($1.60) for a Fontana I'd put up against anything.:mace:
I've honed a Wacker yesterday and it had heel issues like other blades, LOL
I guess its all about taste. :)
