Hello,
Not interested in but just wondering what every one would think of this straight razor I stumbled across on the site The Art of Manliness! I love Titanium (hence the screen name) but I like quality straight's more. Let me know what you think of this razor!
I can't be 100% without having tried one, but it looks way too gimicky. Titanium coatigs are best left on disposables imo.
Also, could you really shave with a razor with "Venus" on it? I mean, it's not very manly at all. How ironic would it be if you dropped it while shaving naked & lopped your widger off!

If you like that look why not blue the blade instead. It'll look just as good if not better and I think it would actually help protect the steel from corrosion.

I've seen these before and the website brags that the titanium coating makes the edge sharper and longer lasting.
The logic doesn't stand.
Think about what happens when a razor's edge is honed. Steel is removed from the surface! That means if there is in fact a titanium coating on the blade, the only place there will not be titanium is at the edge--because it was honed away!
This is a stupid pointless gimmick.
I saw this on the art of manliness too, but I'm pretty sure it was one of those targeted banner ads and not affiliated with the site.
It's dangerous for a site to allow banner ads with pics these days. Someone will write author of the article and complain about the crap that was promoted :rofl:

Sure, just to be safe. Honestly though, "Venus"-anything just makes me think of those girly cartridge razors! :D I don't think too many men would want to buy a "Venus" razor, though...
The site also says it can re-brand the blades - so it won't necessarily have 'Venus' on them.
I guess the more outlandish ones (like the rainbow titanium) would proably set your alarm bells off, but others, like the gun-metal might slip under the radar.
Yeah, these really seem like a crappy idea. I think one of the advantages of titanium as a material is that it oxidizes very quickly and creates a protective patina. I might be thinking of aluminum though. So since the titanium would eventually be removed to reveal the steel, what if there were a razor made entirely of titanium? (or aluminum as the case may be) Rust and tarnish resistant, might stay sharper longer. Thoughts, opinions?
Very pretty, but can they fight? Only the shave test will tell and the ones I saw on-line are $55, so not a big expense to play.

My brother-in-law was picking out a wedding ring at some fancy jewelry store in the Twin Cities. This jewelry store quit selling titanium rings shortly after the fire department had to remove a guy's finger to get him out of a car. Not only that, but they burned out the motor on their Jaws of Life micro-attachment trying to cut the ring.Quote:

I hate to bring up old thread but all of you have no idea what you are talking about, I am a retired barber of 30 years and I have one of these and I cut my wifes hair every month and use this razor to shave her neck and it came already to use and is very easy to keep in shaving condition, I have owned Dovo and Hess and this is just as good as any of those, before you put something down maybe you should try it, but what can you expect from ROOKIES who think that they know it all!!!!
All right. Point taken. Would you please read my post #8 on the first page of this thread and explain the flaw in what I considered to be my logic? Specifically, what good is a titanium coating on a razor when it has to be removed from the edge during sharpening?
I have and it does not have to, the blade is sharp enough and in the six monthes I have used it, nothing more than a good stropping had been needed and a touch up on the leather had been more than enough, the blue coating will not have any effect on the blade that is already sharp enough to shave with. I have had hess that have not held a edge as good as this razor has, believe what you want but I have used this razor and am as happy with it as any that I have owned and that count is around 25 or more as to the exact count, not quite sure any more. As for the Venus that is shown on the razor well it does not come that way, it is just a blue razor with no lettering on it at all.
Maybe we've prejudged these razors. I've only honed & shaved with one Pakistani made razor & the edge failed after the first pass.Quote:

Consider the stupid logic of their claim that the "titanium blue color is UN-REMOVABLE even after sharpening the razor on strop or stone." Sharpening on a stone is accomplished by the removal of steel from the edge. If the coating, and keep in mind it is only a coating, could not be removed, then the edge could not be sharpened.
This rookie is not buying their story.

There are a few razors out there that fall into the "Yes they can shave, but at the price point I would rather have a Dovo, TI, or Vintage razor" catagory...
BTW Utopian is dead on about the coating it does not stay on the edge, and the advertising is at best misleading and at worst a lie...
This does not make sense. Titanium is too soft for good blades, it is strong for its weight but not at all dense so per volume it is weaker than steel by a good margin. And in absolute terms steel can be stronger.Quote:

I think his question had to do with appearance of Damascus steel versus real Damascus steel, but in the case of the titanium coating, they did not say "look we covered it with blue stuff and isn't it pretty?" Instead they claimed a functionality to it that cannot exist.
I guess what I was trying to say in a vague, not completely on topic way is that it is all advertising. Companies have always, and will continue to push the envelope in marketing in order to give their product an edge. Looking at it from this standpoint, the comprison with pattern welded steel is valid.Quote:
