Thread: Old Razor, Lotta $'s

Any members familiar with this razor ? The E-Bay seller's description only mentioned it was circa 1870's and the scales had two snakes on it.
It drew tha attention of only 4 bidders but sold for a lot of money.

The scales on that are pressed horn. This is yet another sub set of razor collecting. Those guys go big bucks for the pressed horn just as the decorated celluloid guys do and the blade is incidental. Just the opposite of us.

When I noticed this razor and the high bids it garnered, I tried to reference the blade marking GR here at SRP to no avail.
I then wondered if it wasn't that blade the bidders were interested in, but the scales. Apparently that was the case here.

Raised relief snake scales like that one and the raised relief lobster scales are highly prized by scale collectors and seem to consistently bring very high prices. Nothing close to the latest and highest I've seen in I don't know when, the scarab scales at over 9 grand. Crazy.
